The answers to today's Strands, game #246, are TICK MINUTE JIFFY FLASH MOMENT SECOND MOMENT INSTANT SPANGRAM: SMALLTIME My rating: Easy My score: Perfect

The subtitle to this Strands puzzle could easily be "Words you use when you tell someone you're going to do something immediately but really you're just going to finish scrolling through social media/complete this video game boss fight/watch the end of this episode/fail to raise yourself off the couch". Or at least that's my experience, because I am always telling people mainly my other half that I will get that washing up done in a SECOND, or walk the dog in a MOMENT, when really it's more a long or at least medium amount of time, rather than SMALLTIME as the spangram would have it.

None of that made this game any harder to solve it's a pretty simple one
but playing it did delay the household chores I was supposed to be doing in a JIFFY, so it was at least apt.

The answers to today's Strands, game #253, are NURSE DOCTOR SURGEON

I needed a hint to get started today, which is hardly unusual for Strands given that the theme clues can be on the cryptic side of things sometimes. Today's was 'To your health!', which to me suggested 'Things you say as you toast someone' or similar such as CHEERS. But I couldn't find that or any others, so asked for my hint and got NURSE.

At that point the task became rather more obvious, and I was able to find DOCTOR, SURGEON and PHARMACIST without too many issues. It took me a while to get the spangram, admittedly, but with that in place I spotted the final answer, DENTIST, and moved on.

The answers to today's Strands, game #260, are ORCA DOLPHIN SEAL MANATEE WALRUS NARWHAL SPANGRAM: MARINEMAMMALS My rating: Moderate My score: 1 hint

These MARINEMAMMALS are among my favorite of all animals. There's something about DOLPHINs, WALRUSes and SEALS that are just so appealing, and as for the slightly spooky but fascinating NARWHAL and MANATEE they're just great,
aren't they? I was surprised that WHALE was not among them, but otherwise all of the big stars of the marine mammal world were here.

This Strands was a tricky one to complete, though, because several of the words are unusually spelled. In fact, I used a hint for the first word, and when it gave me C, O, R and A it took me several minutes to assemble that
into ORCA! I got there in the end, as I suspect most people will, because there are only so many possible answers here; getting started was tough, but there's not a huge amount of specialist knowledge required, at least.

Here's a return to more familiar Strands fare after yesterday's rather more difficult puzzle. The theme here is CALENDAR, something without which I would be absolutely lost given my terrible memory.

Fortunately, I found it easier to find the likes of DATE, MONTH, EVENT and HOLIDAY than I do to remember my nephew's birthday, and only the lengthy APPOINTMENT caused me any trouble.
