I'd love to really get into chess one day, to learn the various openings and strategies to be able to hold my own. Until then, I'll have to content myself with completing this chess-themed Strands game in record-quick time. It
really was very easy. As soon as I found QUEEN it was obvious what the others words would be, and I've played chess often enough that I didn't have to
wrack my brains to recall KING, ROOK, BISHOP, PAWN and KNIGHT. CHECKMATE indeed.

The answers to today's Strands, game #250, are SHAKE WAVE CLAP PRAY PINCH

It seems a shame that the NYT didn't mark the 250th Strands game with a better, more interesting puzzle than this, but here we are. Today's game is essentially a case of 'Say what you see'. All eight standard answers are
shown in emoji form, with only the spangram to work out on your own. So you get the likes of POINT, PRAY, WAVE and CLAP, plus the spangram HANDGESTURES
to describe them all. The only remotely difficult answer was PINCH, which was a rare 'crossover' answer, where the letters formed a knot. It was all a bit of a waste, really, with no brain power required.

The answers to today's Strands, game #257, are KALE ICEBERG ROMAINE
WATERCRESS RADICCHIO SPANGRAM: SALADGREENS My rating: Easy My score: 1 hint

I'm not a fan of salad and very rarely eat it, but even I was able to solve today's easy Strands puzzle. I needed one hint to get started, admittedly, because the theme clue of 'Dress for lunch' was just a bit too far on the cryptic side. Strands is a little variable in this regard; some days the
theme clues give the game away, some days they are only really helpful once you've used up a hint (or found an answer by accident).

That's a hard thing to get right, though, and in fairness it was a simple
task to find the likes of ICEBERG, ROMAINE, WATERCRESS and RADICCHIO once I had KALE on the board; even if you don't eat these SALADGREENS you'll surely recognize the names.

The answers to today's Strands, game #264, are BEND MOBILE BUFFALO RIVERSIDE PHOENIX BOULDER SPANGRAM: CITYNAME My rating: Stupid My score: 2 hints

There are approximately 10,000 cities in the world. There are at least a few hundred in the US alone, depending on how you define a city. And the task the NYT gave us today for Strands? Name six of them. That's all. No theme or connection between them. Nothing clever, like they're all names that are also animals (like BUFFALO and to an extent PHOENIX) or names that are also TV shows (RIVERSIDE) or names that are geological features (BOULDER) or
whatever. Just six CITYNAMEs, all of them in the US.

I suppose the only thing that does link them is that they are all something other than just proper nouns; by that measure New York or Miami or Chicago would not work. But all the same, it's stretching things a bit to call CITYNAME a unifying theme.

That lack of a real concept behind it made it difficult to solve. I got BEND and then MOBILE first, and neither particularly screamed 'You need to list US city names' to me, even when taking into account the theme clue of 'This is the place!'. Yes, I know that both are cities, and it even occured to me as a possible connection, but I dismissed it as silly. Little did I know
