Any suggestion on where to start with researching a family tree?
Looking on line, it is a bit
    overwhelming.

Scott, first thing to do is get a good list of all "family" members you can, brothers, sisters, grandparents, great grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, etc. Then take your list and add date of birth to every name (and date of death if they are deceased). Also add marriage dates that you can come up with. This will give you a good starting point to make your "tree". Joining someplace like ancestry.com helps, but is not necessary. Then start using a search engine to find relatives that are missing. Also don't be afraid to call relatives and ask then questions and see if they have pictures you can make copies of. Visit cemeteries where your "kin" are buried and take pictures of the grave stones. In the end you find the more you discover, the more you will want to discover.

It can be a bit daunting, but a good start is to set up a free account at http://wikitree.com
Once activated, just start adding your immediate family members, using as much verifiable information as you can about them.

If you enter a name, you may see a similar name pop up. If it refers to the same
person you wanted to enter, that means they are already in the database, and you would
then accept that name as someone in your tree. That would be a good thing, since they
already have verifiable information about themselves, hopefully with other family
    members already entered.

We live on a global planet. We are all related to pretty much everyone else in some way.
WikiTree helps us see those relationships.

On Fridays, I receive an email from WikiTree with cousins around the world they have
found, and I post those relationships that WikiTree has found for me. The same would
eventually happen to you, if you provide enough info about your family members.
