I am writing to you from Windows XP :) I have never had any problems
with this because I used portable versions of programs that did not require installation. All that is required when working with them is to copy them from one computer to another. I also replaced many programs
with JS scripts. They play the role of applications. I don't remember
the last time I installed something through Install. In general, it remains a mystery to me why people need new versions of Windows...

I think there are a lot of people in the hobby community that wind up in
the "mutiple machines" boat. ;)

I can sympathize but can't agree with that. I somewhere between dislike and hate most versions of Windows created since Windows 98, which I was still
