I had a knee replacement several years ago and had in-home physical therapy where
they showed me which exercises I should do. Them it was up to me to actually do the
exercises.
Prior to the surgery, I promised my wife I would be very diligent in doing them. Me
being me, I was having so much pain that I slacked off. That's where my wife comes in.
That poor woman had to put up with me for the 3 months that it took to recover.
She had to put on and take off my compression socks every day. She had to spend time
every day to remind me to do the exercises. She had to call EMS for me thinking that
my uncontrolled breathing was a stroke, when it was actually just super hyperventilation
due to improper breathing. I found out that you MUST breathe in through the nose and
out through the mouth. She had to see me constantly vomiting because of my reactions
to the 3 different kinds of opioids they put me on, and the constipation that resulted.
We were both relieved when I finally was able to get back on my feet.
My wife is a saint. Now, she is preparing to have arthroscopic surgery on her right knee
and I have to be HER personal therapist. I owe it to her since she did so much for me.
