When I retired from the City of Fort Lauderdale, I was 52 and too young to get Medicare.
I was also deemed uninsurable if I tried to switch providers because I had a bout with
    cancer.

This is before the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) went into full effect, meaning that I
was still uninsurable if I switched. Until my wife retired in 2011, we were both paying
over $800/month each for health insurance.

It wasn't until I turned 65 that I could go on Medicare, but I also elected to get a
Supplement F plan as a secondary insurance. This supplement costs over $200/month,
but is well worth it. It covers anything that Medicare doesn't cover, including doctor's
visits, hospital visits and surgeries, and durable medical equipment.

When my wife turned 65, she did the same.

We feel that we made good decisions. It is still costing us quite a lot of money, but we
know that we can travel and still have good coverage.

Personally, I don't know much about Obamacare (being in Canada), but this sounds like a good plan to me.

During the 3 years that it took to fully implement this plan, I was still uninsurable due to
my prior medical issues. It wasn't until the 3rd year that the pre-existing conditions. In
that final year, no one could be denied insurance due to pre-existing conditions.

It was the same year I turned 65 so I really didn't benefit from it at all personally, even
though millions of other people did.

Overall it is a great plan. My fear is that it might be abolished if Trump takes office
again. He tried unsuccessfully to abolish it and replace it with another plan. Thank God
he didn't, because he really doesn't have another plan, just the "concept" of a plan.
This, after over 10 years to come up with something.

As an aside, my wife is the first born American in her family. Her parents were from
    Windsor, Ontario.

Big election down there tomorrow. I'm sure you'll get the president you all deserve. <grin>

I wonder if Kamala has a better idea. It's one of the biggest costs of the government here. Im glad your wife and you eventually got to get some benefits.
