The new Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has been released today. I'm at work, but I plan to install it when I get home. I'm looking forward to it.

I'd love to play around with current day flight sims. I don't have the hardware (nor controls) to doso, but man they look so flipping real these days.

I remember running MSFS on MS-DOS 3.3 - amazed back then, flying around O'Hare. :P

Yeah, the first version of MSFS I played was 4.0 on my dad's computer (in 1988 or 1989, I think). Probably also MS-DOS 3.3. O'Hare airport was the default starting airport in MSFS for a long time. And one time, I found out that MSFS had some multi-player capabilities; you could apparently connect over a modem, and you and your friend could both be flying around at the same time. I thought that was so cool at the time, even though I never tried that.

Yes! I remember loading up the original MSFS on my IBM XT. It's amazing that it ran as well as it did. I still have my XT... maybe I should reinstall it for old times sake...

Not exactly a flight sim, but a flying game that I spent way too many hours on back in the day was Jet Fighter 2 for DOS. (256 color VGA graphics). That game was a ton of fun once you got the hang of it. I remember one time seeing how far inland I could fly from CA until my gas tank ran out. I want to say I made it to Utah-ish but I might be misremembering...

I think I started on MSFS 5.0 - but can't remember for sure...

Either way, the same squares and triangles that made flight so fun back then. Imagine that now-a-days you get the literal full experience. WTF!?!?!

I wish I had the system to be able to play - can I come over??!

Yeah, I remember playing MSFS 4.0 on my 12mhz 286 PC with a Herculese monochrome monitor.. I remember it ran well enough to be playable. I was excited when MSFS 5.0 came out, since it was a big leap in graphics. By that time, I had a 386SX-16 and VGA graphics, but a 386SX-16 was not fast enough to make it enjoyable.. Its frame rate was like a slide show on that setup. Same with Doom, unless I shrunk the window size in Doom down to as small as it would go. Things got a lot better for gaming when I got my 386DX-40.

MSFS 5.0 was a significant upgrade for graphics. It was 4.0 that had the more basic squares and triangles, but with 5.0, it started to use textures and shading to make things look a bit more realistic - still cartoony by today's standards, but things were at least solid objects with more detail and shading.

That's an idea, if you actually want to come over and see it some time, as we're both in the Portland area. :)

I was able to download MSFS 2024 last night (it sounds like a lot of people have had problems with that), and I was able to run it for a few minutes (I didn't have a whole lot of time). I think it looks great so far, and the video was very smooth - it seems to run better than MSFS 2020 (I may have to check the graphics settings though).

:P LOL - I wouldn't want to intrude, but yea - it seems like such leeps and bounds since back then. Beautiful.
