    Right-Wing Lie of the Day 0005

    “Those who stormed the capitol yesterday were not Trump supporters. They
    have been confirmed to be Antifa.” -- Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton

    Paxton's claim was based on a tweet by right-wing journalist Paul Sperry
    which has since been deleted, and a screenshot of a Washington Times which claimed that "Facial recognition firm claims antifa infiltrated Trump protestors who stormed capitol."

    Washington Times writer Rowan Scarborough based the article on the claim by
    an unnamed "retired military officer" who in turn claimed that the facial recognition was done by a firm known as XRVision. In fact, XRVision's
    software identified two Neo-Nazis, a Q-Anon supporter, and no members of antifa. XRVision sent the Washington Times a cease-and-desist letter
    requesting that the story be retracted and an apology be issued.

    Interestingly, when Paxton thought that antifa was behind the violence, he characterized the insurrectionists' actions as having "stormed the Capitol." Later, when it became apparent that the insurrectionists were Trump
    supporters, GOP politicians tried to talk back the violent aspect of the incident, event claiming that “watching the TV footage of those who entered the Capitol. [...] If you didn't know the TV footage was from Jan. 6, you
    would actually think it was a normal tourist visit.” (This may be the
    subject of another Right-Wing Lie of the Day.)
