Hello Everybody,

The other day something very strange took place. The five permanent
members of the UN Security Council signed a joint pledge to do away
with nuclear weapons - the US, Russia, China, France and the UK.
Here is the text of that pledge:

“We affirm that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.
As nuclear use would have far-reaching consequences, we also affirm
that nuclear weapons—for as long as they continue to exist—should serve defensive purposes, deter aggression, and prevent war. We believe
strongly that the further spread of such weapons must be prevented.”

Several questions come to mind -

Why are these five countries continue modernising and increasing
their own stockpiles of nuclear weapons?

And what about other countries - such as Israel, India, Pakistan,
and North Korea? Why have those countries refused to sign the pledge?

The 1967 Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT). Under the NPT, the five
permanent member states are supposed to steadily disarm themselves
of nuclear weapons (for any state signing up to it, nuclear weapons
are illegal).

None of the five permanent member states are doing this.
ALL of them continue modernising their own stockpiles of nukes.
ALL of them continue increasing their own stockpiles of nukes.

While at the same time insisting that other states, such as Israel,
North Korea, Iran, and others, disarm themselves of all their nuclear
weapons.

The new UN Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons came
into force on 26 January 2018.

How much longer it will remain in force depends on when the nukes
go airborn. Something tells me the only survivors will be ants and
roaches.
