After extensive testing and certification, Lufthansa now has permission to fit more than twenty longhaul aircraft with an artificial shark skin. This very thin film mimics the skin structure of a shark, improving aerodynamics and reducing aircraft air resistance, kerosene consumption and therefore CO2 emissions.
In the future, the film will be affixed to all twelve of SWISS's Boeing 777-300ERs and eleven of Lufthansa's Boeing 777F freighters. The first Boeing 777-300ER (registration: HB-JNH) from SWISS has been flying with this shark skin since October.
In January 2023, the next 777s in Zurich and Frankfurt will be prepared to be fitted with the aerodynamic foil. Lufthansa claims that fitting a Boeing 777-300ER with the sharkskin could save around 400 tons of kerosene annually and reduce CO2 emissions by 1,200 tons.
