Aeroflot, Ural Airlines and Rossiya Airlines are banned from selling their slots at airports like London Heathrow if they so choose. The decision was made by the British government as part of a new sanctions package against Russia. The slots are worth roughly 59 million euros.
Slots are scarce at busy UK airports. Take-off and landing rights can be traded freely, which also happens occasionally.
Because of the war in Ukraine, Russian airlines have been banned from British airspace. However, the unused slots cannot be sold, it has now been determined.
"As long as Vladimir Putin continues his barbaric attack on Ukraine, we will continue to target the Russian economy," said Foreign Minister Liz Truss.
