Florida is my old stomping grounds, but I've lived in central Arkansas
for 45 years, after my late father's job transferred the family to Little
Rock from Miami.

However, I didn't get licensed until mid-1991, but have been in the
hobby ever since.

Hi Dennis - sure! In the US Army my MOS was 05H which the Army
described as "Performs detection, acquisition and exploitation of
foreign communications employing International Morse Code and simple
printer systems in a tactical or strategic environment." Whew! that
was long winded.

Basically I was trained to intercept morse code being sent by
foreign governments. I sat in a radio shack and searched the bands
for specific morse traffic. I was trained to intercept chinese cut
characters, but ended up copying east bloc traffic.

These messages were always encoded, so unless I copied a cleartext
code word, the job entailed listening to morse in front of a
teletype printer and hitting the keys as I heard the characters.
Always in groups of 5 characters with 5 groups then a spacing and 5
more groups of 5 characters. Of course I would always get the tail
end IMI SK.

I just copied the morse, someone else worked to unencrypt the
messages. Doesn't sound very exiting right? Training for this was
INTENSE. Took longer than 6 months depending on the trainee, and
there were a lot of drop outs.

When I got out of the service, I tried to find a job sending or
receiving IMC, but the only place that really used it was the
maritime service. That didn't pan out.

The last time I operated HF was on the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad Memorial Day Troop Train in late May, 2009. We were in a very cramped Conductor's Cabin of a restored 1927 Harlan and Hollingsworth passenger
car, operating an Icom IC-718 (the get your feet wet in HF, and no frills
HF rig), with a 20 meter hamstick antenna attached to the rear of the
car. How I pulled some of those stations out of the weeds on 20 meters,
I'll never know.

One ham (now a silent key) couldn't get any contacts, and so his wife
(also licensed, and still alive as far as I know), got on there, and we
were hauling in Pennsylvania like there was no tomorrow!! As soon as she
got off, the band went dead (hi hi). You can go to my bio on QRZ (look
for WX4QZ), and click on the first hyperlink. From there, you'll go to a
page with things like:

1) Excel Spreadsheets of selected D-Star, Echolink, and D-Rats Nets, in Eastern, Central, Mountain, and Pacific Time.

2) PDF files related to ham radio.

One of those is my ham radio bio, and in it, is a link on YouTube where
I was working that Special Event Station, 20 meter HF Railroad Mobile. I
now do a Trains And Railroads Net every Friday at 8pm US Eastern Time, on
the QuadNet Array. My eQSL card has a picture of a SOO Line Steam Locomotive
at Random Lake, Wisconsin, courtesy of Mike Yuhas, AB9ON (he has a large
amount of train photos at mikeyuhas.org). The alternate phonetics stand
for "Whistled X-ings (crossings) for Quiet Zones". Some railroads use the letter W for a whistle post to warn the engineer of a highway railroad
crossing ahead...and some use X for "crossing". The letters QZ stand for
"quiet zone". The train doesn't sound the locomotive horn, except in 4 instances:

A) Meeting a train on another track.

B) Maintenance Of Way (MOW) crews working in the area (usually a "slow
order" is in place).

C) Someone is trying to beat the train across at the railroad crossing.

D) Someone is trespassing on the railroad right of way.

Mainly I operate cw and voice every once in a while. I live in a HOA
area so I just have a simple dipole I put up for weekend operating most
of the time.

I used to live in HUD subsidized housing for the disabled, but moved
back to what was my parent's home when I put my Mom into a nursing home
in mid-2018...congestive heart failure took her life in early August, 2019.

Her late brother (who has been a silent key for 30 years) was the only
other ham radio operator in the family, and the youngest engineer hired
on by the Penn Central Railroad.

It's kind of strange when you look at it, I think you're job was
probably harder than mine. As an O5H, they crammed all that info
into my head in about 6-9 months and I can still sit at the keyboard
and copy code, it's muscle memory. Hear the code, hit the keys.

Your job sounds harder to me, you actually had to do some problem
solving! Just a quick aside, what was your MOS?

Well, the learning side was a little difficult I guess. I went to a year of tech school for electronics before cross training in the Air Force over to Communications. Then that course was another year and of course that's only the beginning as every assignment had new types of fixed and portable transmitter/receivers and ancillary equipment like consoles, ATIS, video and audio recorders, etc. But, none of it was hard, quite the opposite really. I enjoyed it, got to travel all over the world and even got a little bit of money each month for my troubles.

I had one assignment to Kelley AFB in Texas, at that time, headquarters for electronic security command - the super secret Air Force command for people sort of like what you did but by that time (1990's) it was mainly audio and data that they were listening to/monitored. I hated entering that complex as the security was unbelievable with multilevels of entry points, guards at all hallways and stairs, and even the cables had to run outside the walls in color coded conduit. No windows, etc. No, man, you can have that crap, I hated it, so I retired and resumed my next life.

In the Air Force, it was not a MOS, it was an AFSC (Air Force Specialty Code). I was a 30494, Two Way Communications Tech. The comparable MOS would probably be a depot level repair tech for field radios like VRC-46's, PRC-66's, or fixed base radios like KWM-2A's, etc, all of which I have repaired at some point in my career. I don't know if they still use AFSC's or not. Things have changed so much in the military now...

Anyhow, thanks for your service!! It was guys like you that kept us safe at night whether most people knew it or not.

We called them SCIF's in the Army (Secure Confidential Information Facilities).

I know it's cliche, but thank you for your service! It's strange,
my dad was in the Army and he was in a Nike-Ajax ADA unit. If you

It's a shame really that many young people don't desire to go into the military. I was 17 when I entered and exactly as you said, became an adult while in. I think we may get to the point that the draft needs to be implemented again. That wouldn't be a bad thing.

My late father was in the US Submarine Service during World War II,
and he retired 20 years before his death as an E-9 Master Chief Petty
Officer.

I never would've passed the physical, due to extremely poor eyesight,
and I was born with no arches in my feet.

I had to have surgery when I was 11, then learn to walk, etc. all over again. Years later, I had to undergo bone spur (plantar fasciitis) surgery
in both feet...and wore special shoes for 6 weeks.

Then, the nearsightedness progressed to cataracts, and I had to have
surgery for that (I was unable to drive at night when I was only 35). While the cataracts have been taken care of, dry corneas causing blurred vision,
and leading to suspect glaucoma, made me give up all driving last summer.

I have the utmost respect for veterans, law enforcement, firefighters, paramedics, etc.

However, for the politicians, it's utter contempt.

Long time no see on the BBS de N4DLT

I barely have time for my own BBS. I was diagnosed with congestive
heart failure just over a year ago, and after that 3rd Covid-19
booster last November, I've had very little energy. I'm seriously
considering skipping any other boosters (although I've had the two
initial shots, and three boosters). However, I haven't undergone the
Redneck Covid-19 test.

This is where you take your favorite bottle of wine (you might want
it chilled). Pour some into a glass, then bring it up to your nose,
and take a sniff. If you can smell the flavor, take a sip. If you can
taste it, you're negative for Covid-19 -- repeat the test as many times
as necessary (hi hi).

Combine that with degenerative disk disease in my back and spine
(which I've had for the last 6 years), making it difficult to sit at
the computer for either BBS or website work, or for running my ham
radio traffic nets (except for Wednesday and Thursday, I run at least
1 net every other day in the week). It got so bad that I had to cut
the pre-net checkin time to only 30 minutes instead of an hour.

If I take Tylenol caplets (the strongest pain medication I have) for
the pain, I get very groggy, and can pass out during the net...so,
basically I have to suffer. Getting old is not for sissies, and if
you call me a sissy, I'll hit you with my purse (hi hi).

Two of the nets that I run for the QCWA (Quarter Century Wireless Association)...their Sunflower Net on Saturday morning, and their
Digital Net on Sunday afternoon, offer "an extended checkin window"
via email and Facebook...from 30 minutes before the net starts, to
25 hours after that point. This way, I'm not rushed to prepare the
log, and it lets the stragglers get on the log, but if they checkin
after the net officially closed, I note such on the log. I know that
many nets do NOT offer things like pre-net or post-net checkins...if
you are not there when the net is in operation, you don't get logged;
whether you like it or not.

There are too many nets, and too little time. I maintain an Excel
Spreadsheet of selected D-Star, D-Rats, and Echolink Nets, plus PDF
files related to amateur radio, at http://www.wx4qz.net/elk.htm

There are over 200 nets in a month...basically, too many nets, and
too little time. In one time slot, there are 6 nets meeting at the
same time!! But, I've noted many hams that are what I call "Hi, Bye,
and QSY"...it's "Net Control, please checkin [callsign], [name],
[location], short time, no traffic"...and not a minute later, they
are doing the exact same thing on another net. A fellow net control
operator wondered "do they have a life outside of ham radio??". There
is no prize, bonus, award, reward, certificate, etc., for seeing how
many nets you can make in a day...never mind how many BBS's you can
logon to in a day. To me, health takes priority over hobbies.

In short, I barely have the effort some days to update the ham
radio and weather data on the BBS, let alone do QWK Mail, or play
the doors.
