I found nice Atari orientated board:

    This is cool. Good find.

I'm so curious about the more esoteric BBS scenes...I assume we all grew up on the DOS BBSes of the 90s but there were clearly Atari and Amiga scenes, Commodore 64/128 scenes, and I wonder what else is out there?

Yeah, I've always been curious too, though the IBM/DOS scene feels so deep (in terms of how much esoteric info is out there) that other than the often overlapping Amiga scene, and dipping my toe in here and there in other places, I've never put much time or energy into it that subject.

Yeah, key word is curious. It's definitely not something I've invested much energy into.

Well, that's false. I've set up several Amiga BBSes in VMs and stuff :P Also some Atari ST stuff.

For me, PC BBSing is where it's at, but Amiga isn't far off. It's a different style/feel though for sure. Different intent. The Amiga boards seem like they must have been really focused on trading, files, warez, etc., whereas the PC scene felt more art/modding related. This is just a generalization I've come to years after the fact though so I could be very off the mark.

The Atari ST thing would be cool but it really wants real hardware. I don't have time/room/patience for that :P The vintage Mac BBS software Hermes II is the same deal (if you want to be able to play doorgames for it) - you need hardware. I'm sure there's a workaround but it's a lot for no real payoff.

Still I'd be curious to dial into some other esoteric boards once in a while. Dura Europa is great, I really like the stuff that guy's done with an Apple II!

Well, I have some Amiga boards I like, I also discovered Atari and C64 boards ran natively on the platforms (mostly emulators, but still).

There is also bunch of boards that run modern BBS tech (Mystic/Synchronet) that are strictly focused on discussions and content related to these retro/esotheric platforms.

I'm right now preping stuff to help one newbie sysop have the whole library of x16 commander stuff in categorized way, with file_id.diz markers, etc.

once I'm done and I'll see it online I'll advertise the board.

My top board that competes with Paulie's Beer Bar is actually an Amiga board (Absinthe BBS, ran by Anst!)

Just wanted to jump in to mention that aBSINTHE doesn't compete w/ 2oFB, it's legit the REASON I started farting around w/ bbSes after being blown away by aNSTs art and coding @ absinthebbs.net:1940!

I'm very aware that my system isn't S-Class... I'd say upper B. It's certainly far above your standard Synchronet unmodded crap... Absinthe and 2oFB are way above and beyond...

Oh man, I hate synchronet, so boring. But luckily I don't run a board so my opinion is purely customer satisfaction driven by consumerism.

I like your board Shurato for the games, that's what I can say :)
I remember you have nice blobber dungeon crawler there that looks like MM1 just in ANSI. I just can't recall its name quickly.

Why I fancy Absinthe and 20-4-BEERS more is because those are the only boards with local communities discussing. That's unique and I'm primarily discussing here and there as something that continually hooks me in.

You didn't have any wrong wording, rockstar... I always just... listen, 2oFB SHOULDN'T be a popular board. Its not spectacular - it has enjoyed hours, days, months and years of my work - but when compared to literal artworks like aBSINTHE, Bottomless Abyss, Wizards Rainbow or a myriad of other awesome places that deserve way more calls... it just doesn't compare.

[I know that it does... but.] One thing that I do do is show up for new users, old users, and everyone in between - I think thats part of the reason 2oFB has had the success that it has; but its no aBSINTHE. My favorite bbS of all time.

So... I mostly agree; I just don't like how you KNOW yer on a Sync BBS from all its prompts to - everything... HOWEVER - you can change all that stuff with enough work; I kinda wish Sync came more like cNet where you HAD to build everything out. And if I had it to do all over again, I WOULD use Sync - I'd have just modified EVERYTHING in Java from the ground UP.

IMO it is the most capable BBS software - just too many Sync sysops that DON'T modify those things that I hate about it...

    Again, IMO.

My first experiences with BBSes were on a Commodore 64 with a 300 baud
modem; most of the BBSes I called were 40-column C= boards. Xmodem
versus Punter protocol seemed to be the argument of the day.

(There's a guy in the BBS documentary with the last name Punter - always wondered if that were a coincidence...)

I called a couple of Apple II boards, but after trying to do university
coding on a 40 column terminal, I picked up a used XT and a 1200 baud
modem and was off to the races, so to speak.

That's kinda cool. I do get some degree of satisfaction ordering newly made Amiga games on 3.5" floppies, the whole analog sensation of putting the disk in the drive, hearing it click into place, whirr up, and then see the icon appear on my computer screen. It's just...fun.

That's the primary reason why I purchased real A1200 years ago.
a Direct followup was to purchase brand new boxes of floppies, 300 of them and then I had spent a lot of time dumping all the ADF/DMS files I had to real floppies and then play retro games as 1990s were never over.

Fun. unfortunately brand new floppies are mostly HD and not fully compatible with Amiga and often faulty for various other faulty reasons ... so I still have about 50 floppies sealed as backup and after 8 years of using about half of the stuff I recorded back to floppies work.

Doesn't matter that much as CIA for mouse interactions also stopped working (no right clicks) and screen is blurry as hell so it seems that I need to find some time to restore the computer one more time in the first place.
