  • Linux After Dark episode - Open Source OSes

From poindexter FORTRAN@911:1415/0 to All on Sun Mar 2 15:38:16 2025
in this episode, the 4 co-hosts all tried open source non-Linux OSes - they picked OpenIndiana, GhostBSD, ReactOS and HaikuOS. I think the HaikuOS experience was the best of them, sad that OpenIndiana (desktop IllumOS, which rose from the ashes of OpenSolaris) sounded the most painful.

They all seemed to feel like they arose from the early 2000s - not fully supporting USB, not supporting EFI boot, and basically looked like a throwback to the problems we had 20 years ago.

I hadn't heard of this podcast, but it certainly seems interesting. However I initially assumed it was video and was really excited to see it, alas it's just audio...oh well. Still cool :)
