  • NEW BEIGE CASE

From poindexter FORTRAN@911:1415/0 to All on Tue Nov 19 11:00:54 2024
What started off as an April Fool's joke is now in production:

    https://www.pcworld.com/article/2524094/silverstone-new-retro-pc-case-is-beige-with-faux-floppy-drives.html

Horizontal layout, ATX support, and two dummy floppy drive cutouts. One supports a 5 1/4" drive bay, the other hides USB-C, USB-A and headphone
    jacks.

Pair it with that retro 4:3 beige LCD and mechanical beige Model M
spacesaver wannabe and you're set. Does anyone make an homage to the
Microsoft dove-bar mouse, or do I need to retrobright one of my old
    ones?

Ha! I've been seeing that thing a lot lately. Personally, if I wanted to build a retro style sleeper, I'd probably go with the Checkmate A1500 Mini or Plus instead. They're a bit pricey, and don't really include all of the modern conveniences a nicer new PC case would though.

I really like this!! While I wouldn't want to use a 4:3 today, the case is really neat! Almost wish there WAS space for a FDD, but this is a neat project/product! Thanks for sharing, I hadn't seen it.

Yes, I see this growing retro community for the Amiga/Atari/C64 and C128, too here in germany. It's amazing what's still new for the 30-40 year old computers or all existing
stuff. And how creative the community is today, too!

So the retro community lives and that makes me very happy!

I've bought 2 weeks ago a Commodore C 128D. After this a 1085DS Monitor and an external Floppy Drive 1571 and another 1541-II. And some other HW-Stuff for this.
If my project 1 and 2 are running in a way, how I imagine it, the next Project is one of
my Amiga 2000 getting ready to act as a second BBS on AmiExpress. Everything's here
so far (I hope). Project 4 will be an Atari Mega ST 4 setting up for BBS'ing. And guess... the Project 5 will be the C 128D with maybe CNet-DS II. I don't know it yet which BBS Software is cool enough for the C 128D?

There's been some updates to Michtron for Atari ST. I've always liked Ratsoft but there are some real Y2K issues and it requires some hacky workarounds for making telnet work. The Atari BBS scene is small compared to PC (of course) but even Amiga BBSes, another Atari BBS would be super cool!

As for any C128D, I have no idea. Image?

    Hi ESC

Hm... There exist some BBS Programs. I have to look (if I'm at project 4) which is the best for me as a Sysop and for the Users!

    - FoRem ST
    - ForeSight
    - BBS Express
    - MichTron v3.0
    - RatSoft

My plans could be: 1st = standalone
2nd = reachable from my Main BBS with telnet outbound

This also applies to projects 3 and 5. I'm not really sure yet!

For projects 3-5, I already have all of the necessary hardware here.
So it doesn't fail because of that!

But first project 1 and 2! I still have a lot of ideas to integrate for both. And it just takes as long as it takes and then it should work, too...
I'm not really in hurry.... And you know.. Sometimes you have more fun to do anything for the bbs and forum... and you have the other days :-)

I hear that. I'm thinking of building a new primary machine very soon, before computer component prices potentially get murdered by tariffs, and I was thinking about how much I'd love to not have to clean the dust out of my case multiple times a year. Maybe I'll go all liquid cooled this time?

Nice looking case! I can't decide if I like the more industrial looking V2 version more than the original though.

I do kind of wish I targeted Micro ATX for my new build - while a little sleeker, my new mid tower ATX case is just as chonky as my current one. That said, I decided I wanted to throw my DVD-RW into my new machine and discovered that virtually no modern cases include 5.25" external bays now, so that really, really narrowed down my choices.

Damn. I actually didn't realize there was any availability issue with them - looks like you need to buy them from 3rd party vendors now, and this being geared towards the Amiga scene, they're pretty much exclusively going to be in Europe? Lame! Although, my various Amiga projects in recent years have got me pretty comfortable with ordering from weird European stores and suffering the high postage fees. :/

    FACT CHECK!

I re-read this and realized it comes across like I'm saying 1. there are almost no cases with external 5.25" bays anymore and 2. this is why I couldn't go with mATX.

While there are definitely not many NEW cases with external bays, you can still buy nice, brand new older models with external drive bays all day long, and often for cheap. This goes for mATX cases too. To make matters more stupid, the ATX mid tower I went with actually has an mATX version that I could have bought that retains its two 5.25" bays, so... yeah. both points defeated there.

The *actual* reason I didn't go with mATX was that the selection of mATX motherboards with the features I wanted was tiny. In fact, there's literally only a single mATX board with the chipset I went with out there and it's no longer being made, so when it pops up it's ridiculously overpriced.

Anyway, just wanted to clear that up for posterity. :P

I've not had a lot of overseas shipping issues, thankfully. In fact, sometimes its even been shockingly quick. I've also yet to have any customs issues either. Maybe I've just been lucky, but hopefully you don't have too many legitimate problems when getting stuff from this side of the pond. :/

Nice - what kind of case is that, out of curiosity? I was actually just looking at my old Mini ITX machine the other day, kind of wishing I'd bought a laptop drive for its case.

Nothing custom, it's a Dell Optiplex mini-tower. I'm tempted to pull off
all of the plastic and paint it dull olive drab - go for an atompunk
    look.

I've not had a lot of overseas shipping issues, thankfully. In fact, sometimes its even been shockingly quick. I've also yet to have any customs issues either. Maybe I've just been lucky, but hopefully you don't have too many legitimate problems when getting stuff from this
    side of the pond. :/

All good so far. Old D&D books and retro computers fly under the radar :D

For other small things, I use my time at major computer events I'm physically attending and shopping spree with my hotel room as target :)

The strangest thing I've smuggled back home so far was some catalyst part for old VW Beetle that a friend asked me to bring which was difficult to order in Europe and plenty in US. I had my luggage labeled with Security Check sticker when arrived home but I delivered.

Other strange thing was a piece of rock that was some Golden Circle Employee of the year award for a friend who could not attend the annual HQ event.

I did not want to break it so I had it in my hand luggage. Conversation with the security check guys was hilarious to the limit! But I also brought it back home safe!

One of my friends was just telling me yesterday about a time he tried to bring a case of wine back from Napa (or some other US wine country spot, I don't recall) and decided to pack it himself instead of having a the winery do it for him. He got the proper wine shipping crate and all of that, but apparently the gate people argued with him for ages about how it didn't follow the proper packing standard (which they could not actually point him to.) Eventually they caved, only demanding he put the whole thing in a bigger outer box.

Of course, no longer obviously being a case of wine, the luggage handlers tossed it around and even stowed it on its side for the trip. When he got it off the baggage claim conveyor, it was apparently *quite* obvious that some of the bottles had shattered. :|

I have one of these Checkmate cases and it's brilliant. Can't speak highly enough about the build quality here.

I love the Amiga 1000 meets Amiga 3000 styling, and how they're made to support
such a variety of use-cases, from re=homing Amigas, to Pi and MiSTER builds, and the Mini ITX/Micro ATX versions. Very slick. I'm really curious about how
his weird line of LCDs does. :P

Nice! AmiExpress is great - the rewrite in E is fantastic and I think the author is pretty responsive.

Which BBS software for the Atari Mega ST? Or are you just planning to use it as
a client to login to other BBSes?

There's been some updates to Michtron for Atari ST. I've always liked Ratsoft
but there are some real Y2K issues and it requires some hacky workarounds for
making telnet work. The Atari BBS scene is small compared to PC (of course) but
even Amiga BBSes, another Atari BBS would be super cool!
