  • Debian Trixie drops 32-bit support

From poindexter FORTRAN@911:1415/0 to All on Fri Aug 15 13:18:45 2025
The new version of Debian dropped support for x86 architectures. I have an old NUC that's 32-bit that I like to keep running, will need to find an alternative.

I know most of the linux distros that supported 32 bit were downstream from Debian.

    NetBSD is always an option...

There's absolutely nothing wrong with sticking with the previous version that still supports x86. I'm sure it will be supported for quite some time, still.

Heck, "Bullseye" just got handed over to the LTS team yesterday. So I think you're good with "Bookworm" for at least a few years yet.

Well - it does still have 32bit packages if needed, just lost the ability to BOOT on a 32bit machine IIRC.

    NetBSD is always an option...

I want to go ahead and voice my love of NetBSD. My G4 Mac Mini runs NetBSD along with a Thinkpad and in both situations it works great.

Its package manager pkgsrc is also real nifty and portable. It can be used on nearly any *nix machine and even on something like Haiku.

I got my start with the BSDs - first BSD/OS and SunOS, then later BSD.
Been wanting to go back to a traditional OS and window manager with
less temptation to twiddle with the OS.

Hey there! Two alternative OSes that are a blast on a G4 MM are MorphOS (if you're into Amiga!) and MacOS9. There's a way to run OS9 directly from the hardware and it's got amazing performance. Highly recommend!
