Back in the early 2000s, my company used AIM for out-of-band incident management and most of our internal comms. We had a proxy server that acted like an AIM server, so if you were communicating with someone on
the proxy list, the messages never went outside your network. It was a pretty cool solution for the time, since you could use one client for internal/external comms but keep your internal comms off of AOL's
servers.

That was the good side. The bad side was that you couldn't run a meeting without people constantly IMing friends and co-workers.
