I was planning on posting about this one too. Pretty crazy!

I do think people should temper their expectations about what this means. I've seen some ignorant people on comment threads basically thinking this means that Commodore is going to rise from the ashes and somehow start being a legitimate player in the personal computer market again, which is kind of insane. Most of Peri's own comments about his plans for Commodore are much more realistic.

In (almost) any case, it's probably a huge improvement to have people who actually care about Commodore's legacy in control of it again.

... yea - I don't know what to think about this. He mentioned he still hasn't funded a 7-figure buy price; and while I 'trust' Perifractic to be good to the C= brand, I don't know that we'll ALL agree with the future if he gets everything finalized.

What does that mean? I'm happy that someone is thinking about C= and even trust their 'vision' - but I suppose time will tell... I wish them the best, I like that they've got some big C= names behind the project - but... time will tell.

Err, yeah, I thought it was interesting that he said they hadn't raised that yet, while also saying they'd pledged 150k to that "Caudwell Children" kids charity thing in the first part of the video. That one made me do a doubletake for sure.

I don't mean to be an asshole but he purchased the name and little else and when I say purchased I mean he has an agreement with the current holders, an intent to buy, if he can't figure out the money situation he has nothing. If he does manage to get the money what can he do with the names? Will he rebadge some Chinese stuff with the Commodore name? All the pie in the sky stuff about the center for children or whatever he can do right now without the Commodore name. He could start a charity or build components or whatever without the name.
I understand that a name can have a great deal of nostalgic value but I can't see it having any real value. My gut says its going to end up being some type of scam.

Yep. Any sort of company resembling the Commodore we know and love hasn't existed since the 90s. They were well aware of the fact they were just buying the name and some associated trademarks and not much else, but there isn't much else to buy nowadays anyway. *shrug*

I'm very curious to know EXACTLY what they'll be getting out of this deal. I believe a lot of the Amiga related trademarks were sold or licensed off to other companies ages ago. He mentioned that, though I don't think he went into any detail.

These days nostalgic value = real value. If you're a member of *any* sort of retro computing and/or gaming community, you'd be familiar with the insane amount of stuff people (from single hobbyists, small business entrepreneurs, and of course, to companies looking to cynically exploit that interest) are flogging, some with quite a hefty price tag.

There are quite a few cases I know of just off hand of people trying to get permission to use Commodore and Amiga trademarks, whether to make a reproduction closer to genuine looking or just to have some affiliation with the brand, and in most cases, failed to do so. So, in theory, this could make the Commodore brand and whatever trademarks they got (will get) with the purchase more readily availably to those who want to use them, although thank god he mentioned having some kind of vetting process and not just allowing anyone to slap a chicken lips on their shitty product and call it a day.

But ultimately, I don't think anyone involved was looking to buy this to make a profit. Peri's videos pretty clearly explain that this is more about wanting to own the brand as a massive fan, and to handle its ownership in a way more befitting of how a fan might handle it, and not a whole lot else. I'd be surprised if he were under any illusion that the money they're sacrificing is going to make rich, which is probably why they're struggling to find "investors."

As for it being a scam, Perifractic is pretty well known. If its a scam, it's a pretty ballsy move. I think it could fall through, or end up being disappointing in innumerable ways, absolutely, but a scam? I personally doubt that.

Probably that... but not just "chinese stuff". For sure, they will use Chinese factories and services like PCBWAY, JLPCB etc. to manufacture retro stuff. In the first video, he said something about the Mega65 project. Probably will get a Commodore logo/name :) or the X16 project.

Who ever is gonna put money on this, i am sure they don't expect to get their money back. For sure the timing is unique, as for example, if they had purchased the trademark, 10-20 years ago, when there weren't "chinese factories" to build whatever you like, it wouldn't even make sense to make such a purchase.

I really hope to see some new old-stuff, with retro vibes... who knows... let's see. :)

Not exactly the same. Atari is a company and perhaps with not a good reputation. Perifractic and the others, are just lunatics, that do what they do, just for the fun, because they want to be the owners. I don't think that they have any expectation to get back their money in full.

Perhaps they will probably manufacture some new old-stuff, with retro vibes, with crowd funding and put the C= logo on that. What ever the case, i think this is a one of kind thing. Hope it ends well.

This is something I was thinking about, too - if Perifractic gets all the way thru a purchase of the trademark (and more) I hope they don't 'attack' the places that already offer C= stuffs out there by protecting the IP to the tee...

Theres been cool Tshirts, Neon signs, badges for C= hardware, etc etc etc... I hope they simply try to add legit C= products and services without changing the communnity thats rallied around C= for the 30 years after.

I think they will embrace the community, as they've enjoyed it - but was a thought...

In all seriousness, I do wonder if they'll start going after people using their trademarks. It's possible these shirts and stuff are licensed, who knows, but I'm sure there's a ton of stuff that isn't. Hopefully they only do the bare minimum they need to and don't get all freakin' weird about it. Given that they're going to be totally community derived, like Paulie said, hopefully that's the case.
