From poindexter FORTRAN@911:1415/0 to All on Thu Oct 16 08:46:54 2025
Conan had Bill Burr on, he talked about doing stand-up in Saudi Arabia
and how it was eye-opening. He also talked about finishing up on
Broadway, a run of Glengarry Glen Ross. Amazing cast!

Kieran Culkin plays Ricky Roma (Al Pacino), Bob Odenkirk plays Shelley
Levene (Jack Lemmon), Bill Burr plays Dave Moss (Al Pacino), Michael
McKean plans George Aaronow (Alan Arkin)

Now, that would be a show. No one playing Alec Baldwin's character,
    though.

What's all that about commedians/stand-upers showing up in Saudi Arabia?
Trevor Noah was complaining about that a lot.

i mean that's the short version of it. supposedly there was a government sponsored event and a ton of famous comedians went over and got paid to do their sets. argument against the human rights violations, etc, etc.

i dunno, it's hard for me to take the complaints too seriously when it's about a comedy festival regardless of the sponsor.

Bil Burr said he wanted to meet Saudis, find something in common, make
them laugh - I'm sure the money helped, too. :)

He commented on "how the really hot women wear their burkhas like this
(motions pulling the face veil down slightly) and got a laugh - and that
    broke the ice.

I understand where the complaints come from, but it's not like they're literally nazis and/or we're actively at war with them or something. Could it be considered in bad taste? Sure, but I guess my point is that exactly where that line is at is highly subjective. I thought the whole thing was kind of weird, but I thought the huge backlash was even weirder.

This is kind of a tangent to this topic, but one thing is for sure - more than ever before, we live in an age where controversy and negativity sells. Main stream media has always been accused of drumming up panic about relatively minor issues, but with influencers and social media as a whole these days, so many will take every single opportunity in front of them to flip out about something in order to get more clicks, more viewership.

Before it goes that direction, this isn't a left vs right issue, party vs party, or anything like that, this is EVERYWHERE online, and in every niche. I watch obscure gaming videos which often lead with a super negative title, even if the actual content isn't that negative, and of course, so many have pivoted to focus on negatives and whatever the outrage of the minute is.

In this case, on one hand, if the whistle hadn't been blown then perhaps no one would even know about it, but I also think so much of the backlash felt manufacturer.

I think part of the problem is a consideration of many people in Western culture (regardless of country considered a part of this cultural block) that countries grown up into different cultures follow the same principles, standards and mindsets.

Reality is that further East you go, feudal relations in traditional way are normal and strong. We're shocked until we realise we have the same... instead of of landlords of the past we have corporations and false gods of capitalism.

I also have no judgemental thoughts to Saudis.. all I know is I don't want to visit unless there is a reason and I've done my researching what I should not do to survive!

I think it's more about the oppression of women than anything else.

Yep. I reeeaally didn't mean to come across like "so what's the big deal anyway!?!" (which re-reading my message, I think I definitely did) - there's a huge laundry list of grievances western countries have against Saudi Arabia, including some pretty damn appalling stuff. I was just surprised by the how strong the backlash about this particular issue there was.
