  • Warp terminal - interesting discovery

From hollowone@911:1503/0 to All on Wed Mar 5 05:44:13 2025

    Check it out (https://warp.dev/)

It's AI enhanced terminal emulator for MacOS/Linux and I think they've finally released also Windows version.

There is a lot of buzz about Ghostty I've seen recently. This is relatively new but definitively should be underscored more.

I've started playing with it + its AI helper thing, relearned emacs basic commands with it very quickly, that's a win!

    Dude - I posted about Warp earlier this week, and it made my most recent YT video;

    https://youtu.be/mb3UjEZDzuQ

I am flipping LOVING Warp! Sure, the AI can be 'a lot', but you don't have to use it and theres even an AI killswitch - but as you mentioned, I kinda like having it available.

I've turned my prompt into a PS1 style, and I'm loving the workflows, notebooks, graphical history and other stuff - we have these powerful computers nowadays, I don't see why we don't use all that CPU and embrace 'heavy' software.

I love it so far!! Good find, h1!

There is a Windows version, but it's only for powershell. I need something
fo the command prompt. I don't use Powershell very often, though due to this
I may now be able to. You only get 100 free queries per month, thoug and I used 5 trying to quit it. I wanted it to exit and quit, not tell me how!

That's pity for Windows, I'm using it on MacOS and it's well equipped.

On Windows I used to use regular cmd.exe + bash from MSYS2. I think PS is a must on Windows regardless how much I dislike it, but limiting its capabilities only to that is a bummer for sure.

But look, I smell opportunity as I believe having Windows users who benefit from DOS/4DOS alike starter with POSIX tools available and PS1 for all the modern cloud/system management on Windows... all together and AI... lovely.

I'll keep thinking about that now!

Isn't powershell/command prompt the same thing? I mean even tho PS allows MORE commands, don't all the Windows/DOS ones work in PS too???

Yes, but I primarily use the command prompt, not powershell. I need commands for the former, not the latter.

I could argue that I don't need an AI shell for the command prompt -
I've been using those commands so long (and they're so much simpler than
their PowerShell counterparts) that you could memorize'm all.

Windows Terminal is a nice bit of eye candy, but I usually stop at green
text on black with slight transparency.

Sometimes I want to write a pretty complex batch file. AI could help with that.

I was able to have it make a script for me to create single line files.bbs files in all subdirectories. It is painfully slow though, the unzip command takes forever. My BBS software is much faster, but creates the full
files.bbs files. Any way, it is working. I love this Terminal!

Nice - AI might not be a perfect solution, but if one doesn't know - it can be really helpful.

I don't use the AI features [much], but Warp terminal has other awesome features that I do use all the time; like Warp Drive for storing bash commands/notes, graphical history, etc etc...

    I like it.

docs.warp.dev is really good and covers everything - theres a nice theme collection you can add easily w/ one git clone command and you can learn about all the Warp features.

I love Warp Drive, an easy place to store CLI commands, notes or anything really. The keyboard shortcuts help and can be used to quickly move around all the Warp features. I love the graphical history and some of the other Warp-specific things...
