If you tried to take a door game's source code from 30 years ago compile it with a modern OS/compiler, the source code wouldn't work without updates... Often times significant updates that are way too difficult
for a hobby developer to make.
I think what we need is a universal emulator that would take any compiled code and run it. I realize that is a huge generalization, but I don't honestly feel like it would be an impossible task to make happen.
