  • new bbs client software I'm cooking - headline

From hollowone@911:1503/0 to All on Mon Oct 20 10:21:52 2025
Paulie is my first tester, it's MacOS only for now but should run on any linux or linux stdlib compilable environment (msys2). will see.

I'm testing core features but if Paulie keeps saying "I'm gonna leak it, I'm gonna leak it!" then it seems I'm close to be ready to release.

It's not a game changer but cp437/latin1 and utf-8 compatible telnet client that runs directly in your terminal and does not break the boards like standard telnet do.

Rendering is close to perfect (I have few last bugs to fix) and now adding zmodem support natively. once that done 1.0 goes public and I'm working on ssh support as well.

If that sounds interesting, signal it and I may include you in beta testing as well.

    Hi h1,

I'd like to signal that i'm interested in testing the client. Recently i compared syncterm and icy_term on my hw and would like to test something else.

Any feedback for icy_term? I want to rework it a bit - since years exactly :). Want to switch the UI lib maybe... need to investigate more and a new release of the ui lib I want to use is close - they didn't release in ~1 year.

But I'm always interested in feedback.

It's cool, it's not as cpu heavy as syncterm (70% vs 15% or so), but during ansi graphics screens it makes artifacts at the bottom of the screen. Also in MRC the bottom line where you write (in fullscreen) is sometimes missing like one row of pixels. And you can't run it on a rpi due to unsupported shaders. But overall ok, like it.

I would be glad to try to compile it on OpenBSD if you want! If you send me a dependency list I will have a look at it.

I'd not say mine is better as it doesn't support download/upload at all yet and no ssh what so ever, it breaks some BBSes visually when they don't break lines for 80x25 correctly as I don't yet handle all the ANSI escape codes and translation between UTF-8 and CP437/Latin1 well.. bu getting there.

Fun of using mine is though that it comes as regular command that stays in terminal while rendering the damn thing quite well already.

It has a launcher that is better than icy_term for me with one feature.
it not only counts the logins to your saved boards, but also sorts boards keeping the most active (most frequently used) to stay on top.

That's a feature request I raised towards icy_term myself. and I still use icy_term when I need to download/upload but all the rest use cases I find my own client so well fitting my own needs that I'll of course share.

speaking of sharing. macos silicon build suits you well or you need a different build?

Can you provide boards that break icy_terms? I find it very well rendering ansi escape codes and I'd rather describe mine that breaks visually sometimes.

I'd love to attend as many corner cases in my own development too so boards and screen pointing suggestions are super beneficial to know, regardless of the client you use.

I would be glad to try to compile it on OpenBSD if you want! If you send me a dependency list I will have a look at it.

It's MacOs C/C++ source compiled with cmake/clang and no other dependencies than the system and standard library so far.

But the code is dirty.. so let me clean it up before sharing on github.
I'll come back with a github link shortly after I finish adding zmodem and ssh support which should be ready next week I hope.

That would be my v1.0 candidate worth sharing fully under some open source license. Until that I'm happy to share my macos/silicon build I'm focused on getting this thing feature complete and keep teasing :)

That sounds pretty good. I am rubbish at C/C++ but what I lack in skill I make up for in enthusiasm!

y I'm not happy with the ui situation in icy_term. ATM I'm hacking a bit at icy_board still - switching the ui lib is a huge task but I need to do it. I've some issues in icydraw/view/term which I can't fix and the current one I use doesn't look&feel good IMO.

I need to rework the rendering code as well. But it's on my todo list.

macos silicon is ok, but arm build based on rpi trixie would be fabulous =)

Can you provide boards that break icy_terms? I find it very well

e.g. when you go to 20forBeers and in messages open the indexed message reader then there is a line of chessboard pattern in the bottom of the screen.

... Are you still here? The message is over. Shoo! Go away!

also apart what I already mentioned -- it would be cool when you log off a bbs to have some response from the UI like 'Disconnected' not just a stuck screen.

I also noticed that icy_term stretches a 80x25 screen on my wide screen much more that syncterm to the sides
