  • Too Much Time On My Hands

From MaxxDamage@911:1423/0 to All on Mon Dec 15 12:32:38 2025
I retired from the Air Force after twenty years in 2004. After a couple of short jobs, I got a job with a defense contractor. My twenty year anniversary with that company was Labor Day 2025. Three weeks later two billionaires in Washington DC decided I had worked enough so we got the DOGE ax.

I'm too close to my preferred full time retirement date. I guess I'm prematurely retired. Now, I need to figure out what to do with all this extra time.

First, congratulations... sort of. With 20 years in the USAF I'm sure you're drawing that DOD (err.. DOW?) retirement already, so that's a nice little cushion. I hope you don't need to work full time again because I'm dreading having to get back out there in my 40s, I can't imagine how brutal it'll be in your 60s. :/ I guess it depends on your line of work, to some degree.

Second, hobbies? I don't know what kind of stuff you're into already, but most likely you can expand on what you're already into. I literally feel like I could quit now and not start thinking about new things to do for like 10 years. :P

My 20 years as an aircraft mechanic gave me a very terrible back. I can usually stand for about 10-15 minutes before the pain forces me to sit down.
I was planning on retiring next July anyway. I'm just getting an early start whether I want to or not.

Don't get me started on that stupid Department of War name change.

I was working for a defense contractor for the last 20 years. It's not a government job so it's not a 20/20 retirement thing for me. Since our contract
ended early I didn't get to officially retire from that job. The government took back our money and we left.

Well first off, congrats! Even though you were not necessarily ready.

As for coming up with things, start building stuff? I don't know, I can't wait to have time... But we'll see .

Seriously though, what kind of hobbies do you have? Surely there's room to get more deeply involved in some of that stuff.

Probably the first thing I need to do is get my NAS in shape. I spend more than a year ripping all my blu-rays and CDs to it for Plex.

I have a bunch of junk files I don't need. I need to get rid of a lot of them. I already deleted a bunch of outdated resume copies. I don't need a resume any longer.
