One of my favorite things to do is make fun of people that call themselves Audiophiles. To me audiophile means I have too much money and I'm gullible.

I read an article this morning about an audiophile's 35 year quest for bass. This guy spent over $100K putting together a system. It included Mark Levinson components, Thiel speakers, thousands of dollars on cables, $500 on a power cable, hundreds on special wall outlets and power conditioners. Still he didn't have the bass he wanted.

Then one day he discovered some high dollar isolation feet for his speakers and magically his system suddenly had bass.

I don't believe in any of that crap. I used to think I was an audiophile until I started reading about audiophiles. Now, I just consider myself a musicphile.

That was pretty much exactly my experience as well. It's funny to me how much of a stereotype that ridiculous side of the audiophile community is, though there are people like that in pretty much every hobby and community, though its audiophiles that get to deal with having that reputation. :P

This is spot on... Back in the day I spent decent money on analog
cables, but once we went to digital, that stuff pretty much fades away.
But I think this is just human nature to do this on products in general,
not just audio gear. We just like to buy want we percive as a quality
product. Sometimes that quality means something and sometimes it
    doesn't...

In college, I worked as a research assistant with a couple of professors
who I consider true audiophiles. They told me of a speaker system a
friend of theirs had designed that used electromagnetic fields to drive
ionized argon gas. The idea was to drive the gas with an electromagnetic
field as ideally as possible and use the argon/air interface to transmit
the acoustic waves to the ears as cleanly as possible, without
    distortion.

This "speaker" system diffused pure argon into the surrounding
environment as it played music and was therefore very expensive to
operate over long periods of time. But, according to my profs, it
reproduced audio better than any conventional speaker system every
    devised.
