From MaxxDamage@911:1423/0 to All on Mon Jan 19 12:52:28 2026
Am I the only one still buying physical media? I have 2000+ CDs and still buy them when new ones come out that I want. Yesterday, I got a copy of Kreator's new CD Krushers of the World and I'm expecting Megadeth's final CD next week.

According to my Jellyfin dashboard, I have 1316 movies and 70 TV Series total 2500+ episodes on my NAS. I'm currently ripping my new Star Trek Enterprise and Lower Deck blu-ray to add to my totals.

Every piece of media I buy gets immediately ripped and added to my NAS. It's so much easier than getting up, searching for something to watch then loading it into my blu-ray player.

Absolutely! I collect vinyl presses of old radio dramas (mystery,
sci-fi, horror), and once I have the extra $$$ I will be investing in reel-to-reel for the same.

I buy blu-ray discs of movies that I love with new restorations. I also
buy DVDs of obscure films and television that haven't been released on
blu-ray, mostly cult Asian cinema. I started to collect VCDs of the
same for some ultra-rare titles, but Jesus Christ that quality is crap.
    Never again.

I just don't feel like I truly own something when it is in purely
digital form. For example, there is a big difference, for me, in having
a .PDF versus a book on my shelf. That isn't a perfect analogy as the
reading experience itself is different in physical print versus tablet
or other device, but you get the idea.

In the end, looking over my various shelves of discs, books, and games
gives me a sense of quiet satisfaction that looking at a list of files
just doesn't provide. To each their own, of course! The convenience
factor that you bring up is certainly valid.

I wonder if it is a generational thing as well? The last couple
of generations have been raised on digital releases. It would be
    interesting to see the stats.

Yessss! We're obsessive vinyl collectors too! This is actually one of
the reasons we love visiting Europe so much -- so many great record

Stupidly enough, after *massively* slimming my CD collection down like 8 years ago (I had like 1500 CDs at one point) my girlfriend and I have been obsessively collecting a lot of our all time favorites on vinyl. Unfortunately we're both huge music fans, so we have *a lot* of favorites. I think we're well over 150 now. :/

Beyond that, I really value not having so much physical stuff cluttering up my life, which isn't to say I don't have any, it's to say that I'm picky about what I collect/keep and what I don't. I still intentionally collect a few things, media-wise: I have a pretty big collection of Xbox, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3 games, and I have a ridiculously huge collection of 80s and 90s big box PC games and software, but that's about it - I got rid of most of my older retro gaming stuff and anything else I acquire and keep digitally.

I ripped all mine to my NAS as well but then i donated all of them to
goodwill after that. I have mostly techno and rap, ya know the kind of
stuff easy to sell from goodwill, lol... Information Society,
Psykosonik, The Art of Noise and Krawftwerk are some of my favorites and
    I kept those CDs

I am strange in that I don't listen to music much at all. In the car it
is tech podcasts for entertainment and learning. I never listen to music
at home unless its part of some youtube video. I do really enjoy music,
but listen if my podcasts are finished for the week which isn't often.

Reading is the one place I've gone digital. As my eye sight has gotten worse, I switched to an eReader so I can select the font size that works best for me.

Kreator is so awesome! I saw them open for Mercyful Fate a couple years
ago and they were just absolutely facemeltingly amazing. The whole show
was just spectacular: from the hanging/impaled monks framing the stage,
to the bass drum triggered strobe lights, to the face melting riffs... I
was a puddle of putrid melted flesh and sinew by the end of their set!
Nuclear Blast is running a Kreator sale right now in case you want to
    hoard more awesomeness!

I'm really excited about Megadeth's self titled. I pre-ordered the album
eons ago and I have a ticket to see the premiere of the new Megadeth
movie on Thursday! Really excited about that... hopefully there will be
    some cool merch there too!

Next Iron Maiden tour in September will have Megadeth (and Anthrax!)
opening. Beyond stoked for that one!!!

Yeah, I only subscribe to one - and that's only because I'm charged for it before I realise (prime) - but I do buy stuff off of amazon, so the free next day delivery is great.

And agree, its rare to find something good to watch, and when you do find something, I consume it all within a few nights. None of the suspence "next week at 7:30 stuff anymore"...

I was. The first time I saw a TV was 74 - I moved from South Africa to Australia. Lived in a small country town in the middle of the state of Victoria.

Those were the days when shops closed at midday on Saturday and didnt re-open until Monday. As teenagers we had to find interesting things to do...

Yeah so 10 years ago he noticed his voice was starting to get a little

last tour and was able to stand right in front of him in the center of
the stage for the whole show! It was absolutely insane!!!

Ahh, I hadn't been following them too closely for a long time now - I didn't realize he'd actually been getting better. That's awesome! Maybe I'll try to see them again if they ever come to this area again - sadly, I think they're skipping Seattle on the current tour, unless they've added more dates.

I guess I took a bit different of a route at that time. Undisputed and Diabolus didn't hit me right (felt like they went soft, much like Metallica), so I went further down the rabbit hole of death metal. Started going to concerts like Cannibal Corpse, Broken Hope, Deicide, and a bunch of other local bands in the Milwaukee/Chicago area. ;)

Fast forward years later, I heard "Final Six" off Christ Illusion, and I was hooked again, and began listening to a bunch of their newer stuff. None of it really stuck with me like the older stuff as far as remembering lyrics or anything, but it seemed like they came back out of whatever funk they were in with those two oddball albums.

I've caught a few videos somewhat recently of random drummers doing their thing. One that had impressed me was Austin Archey from Lorna Shore. Dude has to be one of the fastest current drummers around, and his facial expressions are calm as all get out. ;)

I can't imagine you haven't heard Megadeth's new(er) remake of Ride the Lightning? I kinda liked it. A bit heavier, and his voice has always been better than Hetfield's. When we were kids we always tried to imagine Metallica songs with Mustaine's voice.

I saw Sanctuary, Vio-lence, and Testament in a tiny punk club in SLC called the Speedway Cafe. It was so small that Testament blew a circuit breaker and we had to wait for it to get fixed. I had no problem with the John Bush era. I was stationed overseas at the time and was confused when I heard the news. I found drummer Charlie Benante's email

I can't imagine you haven't heard Megadeth's new(er) remake of Ride the Lightning? I kinda liked it. A bit heavier, and his voice has always been better than Hetfield's. When we were kids we always tried to imagine Metallica songs with Mustaine's voice.

I listened to the entire CD the other day. It's pretty good. I didn't like Dave's vocals on Ride the Lightning though.

Sometimes those are the best concerts to go to. Makes it seem so much more of a personal experience.

While "The Rave" here in Milwaukee, is a larger venue for general admission (no seats), there is a bar or two in the same building, where I've seen some shows. Maybe only 100-200 fans, but had a great time regardless, and usually the bands are way more personable, like taking a break after a few songs, heading to the bar off to the side, but in the same room for a drink, mingle with fans, then go back up and continue their sets.

Another time, we saw Clutch at a different venue, and after everyone piled out of the place after the show, we were wandering around looking for a drunk buddy that got lost, and ended up shooting the shit with them for like an hour outside their tour bus. ;)

I've seen Iron Maiden a couple of times, once with Anthrax opening. Unfortunately, my back had gotten so bad that I don't think I could last through a concert, either standing or sitting in stadium seats. I guess I'll just have to rely on my memories, while they last.

I saw Gary Numan a few months ago, and needed a couple of advil the next morning to get moving. Don't know how many more general admission concerts I have left in me... :(

Undisputed Attitude actually turned me on to a lot of really great punk bands and started my deeeeeeep descent into that genre! I lived in SF
for a while and was so stoked to finally see Verbal Abuse at a
squathouse because of that album haha

I usually find metal covers of punk songs to be pretty lousy, even those by bands I love. That said, I think Undisputed Attitude is probably one of the better ones. They understood the assignment and it also sounds like they probably had a lot of fun recording it.

While metal was devolving into horrible nonsense, the found refuge in
the punk scene. Exploited were putting out some really great thrash
albums like The Massacre and Beat the Bastards, and the Misfits started
to play again with Graves singing. I think Undisputed made it "ok" for teenage me to crossover into that scene.

Ha! Yeah, Exploited's evolving sound is pretty interesting - compare Beat the Bastards to Punks Not Dead or Troops of Tomorrow. Still, I dig it, but a lot of punk purists fell off the bandwagon when they got a bit heavier (if they ever liked them to begin with.)

I think some metal fans would like much of the "d-beat" crusty stuff, both old and new. A lot of it is pretty "heavy" without necessarily sounding like metal, and of course its often blazing fast. Not exactly d-beat but influential to it, Amebix would probably be a good jumping on point, actually.

I have nothing against Gary Holt and absolutely love Exodus. I
mean, everyone's doin' the Toxic Waltz, right? Bostaph plays on one of
my favorite Slayer albums... but damn, Dave Lombardo is just so special. Ever watch any of the drum cam footage shots of him playing? There's a
few videos on YouTube where it's just absolutely insane watching him do what he does. Total <bowing> "we're not worthy" situation!

Hell yeah! Dave Lombardo is one of my favorites. He definitely inspired a lot of my drumming back in the day. He's still awesome.

Ha! To be fair, the more poppy Hetfield got with his singing, the less I liked it. His "singing" on their classic thrash albums is great, but after the Black album he started trying way too hard. On the other hand, Mustaine's voice is anti-pop, even when he really tries to pull it together. :P Even still, Megadeth does have some damn good earworms somehow - I had the chorus of "Trust" from Cryptic Writings randomly stuck in my head the other day after talking about Megadeth on here. ;)

I hear ya. I listen to a lot of faster, heavier, and more obscure stuff too, but I never got down the unintelligible grunts and growls of a lot of grindcore, death metal, and the like. I kind of like the higher pitch screaming shit like some black metal has, though I draw the line at cheesy-ass shrieks. :P I have a soft spot for the over the top operatic style like a lot of NWOBHM bands have, since Iron Maiden was one of my first loves, but overall being a big punk and hardcore guy, good ol' fashioned yelling is where its at, which is probably one of the reasons I still like a lot of thrashy stuff. Ultimately though, I think it's all pretty damn subjective.

While Pantera and Slayer have been my solid go-tos since I was about 15 years old, I've been on a really odd travel path recently. While I had mentioned Lorna Shore, I also checked out WhiteChapel (it's no wonder most deathcore bands and fans look up to this guy (Phil Bozeman, I believe) - his voice has so much range and dimention, even if it is a lot of grunting and growling), and a bunch of other deathcore bands I've never heard of before. Then, I went on a wierd youtube trip listening to like ravish dubstep, and then eventually some crazy ass beatboxing (Fuck you, Facebook Reels!). :D

Then after listening to some Lorna Shore and WhiteChapel, catch a Cannibal Corpse video and by that point they feel kinda soft in comparison. Mfers these days are getting pretty fuckin' heavy! HAHA

Fun story: I used to tour with a (no name, don't get excited) punk band
and we opened for the Exploited one night. It was amazing. But what was
even more amazing was after the show, Wattie comes up to us asking if he
can do his laundry in our bathtub (??). So, we walk him back to the band
house which was actually right above the club we were playing at and
shoot the shit with him until 4am, only understanding like 1 in every 10
words he said due to his extremely thick Scottish accent. Then he goes
to the bathroom, fills up our filthy band house bathtub with water and
soap and just scrubs his laundry down like it's 1823. When he's done, he

with a big, seemingly "F YOU!" drum solo to Slayer haha (Toque De
    Muerto)

Do you still play drums? Were you in any bands?

While Pantera and Slayer have been my solid go-tos since I was about 15 years old, I've been on a really odd travel path recently. While I had mentioned Lorna Shore, I also checked out WhiteChapel (it's no wonder
most deathcore bands and fans look up to this guy (Phil Bozeman, I believe) - his voice has so much range and dimention, even if it is a
lot of grunting and growling), and a bunch of other deathcore bands I've never heard of before. Then, I went on a wierd youtube trip listening to like ravish dubstep, and then eventually some crazy ass beatboxing (Fuck you, Facebook Reels!). :D

Then after listening to some Lorna Shore and WhiteChapel, catch a
Cannibal Corpse video and by that point they feel kinda soft in comparison. Mfers these days are getting pretty fuckin' heavy! HAHA

Vocals like Lorna Shore and Whitechapel don't quite cross that line to me - the fact that *any* of their vocals are intelligible removes them from the category I was talking about. I'm talking about the super guttural shit that sounds like the lowest register those guys hit, but continuously. A lot of Cannibal Corpse's older shit (sorry, I don't really know their different eras) is a good example, since you mentioned them. It's like the metal equivalent of mumble rap to me. Blech.

But hey, I'm not talking trying to talk shit if you love them, that's just my personal taste - opinions are like assholes!

I enjoyed the slightly faster tempo and the mix/master of this album
made the track exceedingly tasty to listen to! I actually went to see
the new Megadeth movie on opening night and there was a smile plastered from ear to ear once that track came on. I was also like 4 beers and a bowl of bottomless popcorn into the night...

I could just google this in 5 seconds, but I figure I'll ask here for sake of conversation with actual cool human beings. ;) WTF is this Megadeth movie all about? I've been seeing mention of it recently but I haven't looked into it. I'm assuming its a documentary - is it about their entire career, just their latest album, something else entirely?!

Total agreement. Those old 7"s are hilarious, like Fuck a Mod and Barmy Army! During the christmas season, my building's super had jingle bells playing in front of his basement apartment on a loop and I couldn't get Fuck a Mod out of my head for all of December as a result haha

Ha! I always loved "Fuck the USA" - way too catchy to have those lyrics. :P One of my old bands used to cover Dead Cities, which was a favorite of mine.

Fun story: I used to tour with a (no name, don't get excited) punk band and we opened for the Exploited one night. It was amazing. But what was even more amazing was after the show, Wattie comes up to us asking if he can do his laundry in our bathtub (??). So, we walk him back to the band house which was actually right above the club we were playing at and
shoot the shit with him until 4am, only understanding like 1 in every 10 words he said due to his extremely thick Scottish accent. Then he goes
to the bathroom, fills up our filthy band house bathtub with water and soap and just scrubs his laundry down like it's 1823. When he's done, he thanks us profusely for the use of our bathtub and then "pays us back"
by filling up a bunch of pint glasses with extra whiskey that the
    promoter gave him. Surreal night!

Goddamn, that's amazing! I never got to see The Exploited, unfortunately, but if I got hooked up with whiskey from Wattie I'd be telling my grandkids about that shit at every opportunity. In fact, I don't have any children, but I would reevaluate that decision just to be able to pass that down. :)

This pales in comparison, but the first Exploited anecdote that comes to mind is that this one girl I used to date ages ago had a best friend who she'd hang out with a lot and *her* boyfriend was a bit of a bonehead (in every meaning of that word) but he liked a lot of cool music, plus he was a damn good drummer, so we always bonded over that shit. Every time The Exploited came up in conversation (which apparently happened more than you might think - maybe I had an Exploited shirt I used to wear a lot at the time?) he'd always get all sad and be like "it's a damn shame about Wattie man... " Yeah, for some unknown reason he was under the impression that Wattie had died at some point in the mid 90s and I *COULD NOT* convince him otherwise, even after burning him a copy of Fuck the System when it brand new in the early 2000s. At some point I just gave up trying entirely, and awkwardly tried to change the subject every time he brought it up. :P

I don't. I don't mind giving everything a try once, though. Well, except maybe country, gospel, and acapella. I was just mentioning the pretty wierd rabbit hole I went down awhile back when I had no idea what "deathcore" was, and was introduced to some of them. There's so many subgenres of metal these days, it's confusing to me.

So that was exactly the question I had when I first heard about it! I
followed the link and the theater it was playing at was literally right
next to my office building *AND* they serve booze *DURING* the show...
so I immediately got a ticket without doing any further research!

It turned out to be a listening party for the release day of the new self-titled album, hosted by Dave (he wasn't there of course!). They'd
play a song, then he'd talk about the song, about how the band wrote the
song, about what he was going through when coming up with the lyrics and
riffs, etc etc etc; then they'd play the next song... rinse and repeat
    until the album's done.

Dude, it felt like I was stuck talking to the drunk guy at the back of
the bar for 100 minutes! In this movie, I learned this about Mr.
    Mustaine:
    1) He can predict earthquakes.
    2) He has no ill-will towards James or Lars... or Kirk.
    3) His mother-in-law had alzheimers and fell off a cliff while
hiking in the desert (?!?!) and it took them a month to find the body
    (?!?!?!)

There were a few more gems but a future therapist will have to get them
out of the repressed part of my brain. Either that or I'll remember them
as soon as I hit send on this message!

Oh! Remembered another gem: he asked all the members of the band to
listen to every song (220+) in Megadeth's ouvre and explain why every
single riff belonged in each song... and what their purpose was, how it
added to the artistry of the song, etc etc. Massive take home exam.

Oh! And one last gem: he said "when I first started, I couldn't even
afford a real guitar... now I'm part of the illustrious Gibson family"
and it panned out to him totally encumbered by piles of Flying V's. It
    was pretty hilarious.

Ok, I think that's all the fun stuff... you didn't miss much haha

I hear ya. I listen to a lot of faster, heavier, and more obscure stuff too, but I never got down the unintelligible grunts and growls of a lot
of grindcore, death metal, and the like. I kind of like the higher pitch screaming shit like some black metal has, though I draw the line at cheesy-ass shrieks. :P I have a soft spot for the over the top operatic style like a lot of NWOBHM bands have, since Iron Maiden was one of my first loves, but overall being a big punk and hardcore guy, good ol' fashioned yelling is where its at, which is probably one of the reasons
I still like a lot of thrashy stuff. Ultimately though, I think it's all pretty damn subjective.

Ha! King Diamond is a trip. I've never gotten *super* deep into his stuff (which you'd think I would given some of the other bands I love) but I've had friends who loved Mercyful Fate and his other stuff. It seems like he was a *massive* influence in a lot of Metal niches, like early black metal.

He's an interesting guy with a broad back catalog - started singing with Steve Vai, then in a thrash metal band called Strapping Young Lad, then
a solo work in a hard/melodic band called Ocean Machine (one of my favorite albums), then many albums under Devin Townsend Band or Devin Townsend Project, each quite a bit different.

All the time, while doing bizarre side projects like Punky Bruster (supposed to have an umlaut over the u) and Ziltoid the Omniscient.

I've heard of Strapping Young Lad before but for some reason always assumed they were some kind of poppy indie rock band, and I suppose never heard them. Apparently I was *very* wrong. :P

    |10JP|08>|02 Ha! King Diamond is a trip. I've never gotten *super* deep into his stuff|03
    |10JP|08>|02 (which you'd think I would given some of the other bands I love) but I've|03
    |10JP|08>|02 had friends who loved Mercyful Fate and his other stuff. It seems like he|03
    |10JP|08>|02 was a *massive* influence in a lot of Metal niches, like early black metal.|03

I remember being a little shit pre-teen all into death metal and hearing
King Diamond sing for the first time... man were we all rolling on the
ground in stitches hearing that falsetto! But man, when I went back to
his records in middle age, that hit hard! The falsetto sounds like Paul
Bearer or like some ghostly narrator singing a really in depth horror
story for 45 minutes. So awesome. Definitely try the Abigail, or "Them"
if you want to check him out again.

Their old guitar player, Michael Denner, owns a record store in
Copenhagen called Beat Bop and I always make it a point to pop in and
dig through his collection. It's not the best store in the world but he
does have a wall of MF/KD albums he played on and last time I was there
I was able to get this really cool demo collection pressed on yellow
    vinyl. So cool!

But, yeah, MF was incredibly influential -- as a matter of fact, when
Metallica was recording RTL and MoP, they didn't have enough money to
record in the States, so Lars got them all studio time in Copenhagen and
they were too poor to fly their gear over so those albums are actually
recorded with MF's equipment! (Sweet Silence Studios in Amager Bio, for
    those keeping notes!)

Anyway, huge fan... His stage shows are beyond insane too! KD's stage is
always this 3 story mansion where the drums are on the second floor and everyone's playing their instruments while ghouls and stuff are flying
in and out of the other floors. And MF's stage last time I saw them was
a god damn satanic ritual... KD even came out dressed as Baphomet!

Sean Killian, the lead singer of the thrash metal band Vio-lence sang very fast in a falsetto voice. It took a while to get used to and I think prolonged exposure can call hearing loss. I think he eventually ditched that vocal style.

Ha! Right. I think that's one of the reasons I never latched onto his stuff - it just *barely* crosses over the cool/cheesy line for me. I might feel differently if I tried to get into it today. I think Abigail is one of the few I've listened to a decent amount, mostly thanks to a recommendation from a friend who was literally obsessed with him.
