Definitely one thing I miss about Cali. We used to drive out to Half Moon Bay, hit the beach, and then grab a bunch of artichokes and bring them home to eat.

The ones in stores here are less than half the size. Not even appetizing. ;(

back then they'd buy a whole bird and use every part of it they could in multiple meals versus just buying nicely trimmed chicken breasts.

HOW DARE YOU. DARK MEAT CHICKEN IS THE BESTEST!

I only buy chicken breasts if they're stuffed with some other goodies, like cheese, asparagus, and maybe some bacon. :D

But I'd tend to agree on the whole bird thing. Back then quite a few probably made some kind of stock with the bones, maybe some kind of casserole with the breast (teehee, can you tell I don't care for breast by itself?).

I actually prefer chicken thighs to breasts. I wonder if that's a
    nostalgia thing?

    thighs > breasts

though i think some of my meh feelings on chicken breasts is because of how puffed up they are. too easy to ruin them vs thighs

Then, drive an hour up the coast to Tomales bay for fresh oysters and
    Napa county wines.

    Yes, I'm spoiled.

Although, after moving out of the Bay Area proper, I'm only 2 hours
from Paso Robles, another wine region. We've been headed down that way
more often than Napa/Sonoma these days. Much less crowded, and the
restaurant scene is really picking up.

I prefer the whole bird, preferably beer-can chicken on the barbecue. My daughter watched me prepping one and setting it up on the grill and was
upset by the process. She liked the results, though!

i'm thinking of getting an air fryer so we can try cooking a whole (TINY) bird. don't really have any other options unless we want to boil a chicken. hehe. can't really grill outside here without making enemies of everyone drying their laundry and we don't have a stove.
