They just want us all to know what we're collectively missing out on... which is probably a stock BBS with some old Night Owl CDROMs in their file conferences and a few of the same old message networks and door games everyone else has. Oh noes! ;)

He meant someone added a BBS to telnetbbsguide.com but set their BBS to "closed", which would defeat the purpose of adding it to a site that advertises you have a BBS up.

I recall there was a similar site that popped up a few years ago that was doing discovery scans. I think it might have been 8bitboyz.com/bbs-directory?

I wondered how they cut through the vaaaaaaast majority of results that were garbage or otherwise unrelated - perhaps hand curated, or maybe the scans were just for verification of an inventory seeded from another site like telnetbbsguide.com *shrug*

It has to be scraping other sources for info, possibly such as the sbbslist (https://synchro.net/sbbslist.html), which updates daily with any new SBBS systems that get set up and have the sbbslist export event enabled (which seems to be on by default).

I believe this is the biggest reason why SBBS earns its reputation for having so many stock boards. By the time the sysop has learned how to customize it, it's too late - everyone has already seen their default "Synchronet" logon page
plop on top of the Telnet BBS Guide's list of "new" BBSes, and no one ever visits any of those.

Go info SCFG (the editor) and go to External Programs, select Timed Events, and find the event for ?sbbslist export. The name of the event on mine is "SBL2SMB". This is the event that exports your BBS info to DOVE-Net's Synchronet data echo. If you don't want your data exported until you're ready, go into this event and set Enabled to No.

Worth mentioning that the sbbslist export stuff I described in my last post *does* require having your board connected to DOVE-Net in order for your data to be exported to the network in the first place. But disabling this event is still a good safety net; ensures nothing is being sent out without your say so.
