This is not my area of expertise at all so bear with me... I know we have some Mystic sysops on here and I was just wondering how mods are handled? The Mystic BBS Wiki is really only slightly useful if you know what you are doing, I am not that person...
Generally speaking, most mods are created using the built-in capabilities of whatever BBS software you're running/they were created for. The more expansive and flexible the soft's customization features are, the easier it is to customize, though perhaps less impressive. Inversely, the more limited the BBS software, the harder yet more impressive it is to pull off some really cool customizations / modifications.
Mystic BBS is *very* customizable, featuring a robust menu+acs system, custom strings, display/control codes that can be used almost anywhere, screen templates, and multiple scripting languages.
The more practical use of some of these systems (be it for Mystic or other softs) is unfortunately not very well documented - it tends to be a lot of self-learned and passed down, ultimately "tribal" knowledge that is being lost to time as our numbers dwindle.
For example if I wanted a news section that people go through during
login to see updates to the board? Do you have to get some sort of 3rd party module that plugs into Mystic? Do you have to make it yourself?
There are many, many ways you could do such a thing, some the simple - displaying an ANSI or using a mandatory message area to show news during login, to the slightly more advance (I have custom mod that shows an ANSI but allows users to mark it as read - only unmarked ANSIs are displayed during login - this is done using flags, for the record) to using more robust bulletin/news mods or even doors.
The best way to learn how to mod is to liberally steal from others. :P Seriously though! There are a large number of Mystic mods from over the years out there that can serve as examples for how modding can be done, from simple screen replaces and menu based mods to insanely creative MPL or MPY scripts. It might take a bit of effort to figure out how they work, since it's rarely explained, but you can learn a lot of neat tricks that can be applied to your own setup this way, and that should set you on a path for learning how to do things on your own.
One note: Mystic has changed a lot over the years, and the vast majority of mods won't work with newer/current versions without major changes. There aren't a lot of people/groups publicly releasing mods these days, but there are still a few of us. With that in mind, here's a little mod/tutorial by xqtr that demonstrates a creative use of the ACS and menu system and *is* current:
