• Formatting USB drives with FAT32 under FreeBSD

    From Sean Dennis@618:618/1 to All on Friday, May 05, 2023 22:29:26
    Hello All,

    FreeBSD doesn't have an easy way for format drives for FAT32 so I wrote a script to do this:

    ===
    #!/bin/sh
    # A little script to format USB drives with FAT32 under FreeBSD
    # Written by Sean Dennis KS4TD (digimaus)
    # Released under the BSD 3-clause license

    #
    if [ -z "$1" ]; then
    echo -e "\nYou must specify a disk label on the command line.\n"
    exit 1
    fi
    read -p "Do you really want to format /dev/da0 [Y/N]? " choice
    case $choice in
    [yY]* ) echo "\nStarting format process...\n"
    gpart destroy -F /dev/da0
    gpart create -s mbr /dev/da0
    gpart add -t fat32 /dev/da0
    newfs_msdos -L $1 -F 32 /dev/da0s1
    echo -e "\nFormatting completed.\n"
    exit ;;
    [nN]* ) echo "\nAborting format process.\n"
    exit 1 ;;
    *) exit ;;
    esac

    Hello All,

    By the look of it, formatting by hand is not that bad :-)
