The April, 2022 issue of The Modern Square is released today, Mar. 15, 2022...and it is now available on the website of the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation, at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/the-modern-square

The back print edition is the February, 2022 issue, and the January,
2022 back print edition has been removed. This 2 month delay in the
release of the print edition prevents non-subscribers from getting
access to the current issue in a timely manner.

I have emailed the print copy to Arkansas Printing, and they should
start work on it today, Mar. 15...and hopefully, it'll be in subscribers mailboxes by the end of the month.

Work on the May, 2022 issue will start on Palm Sunday, April 10, 2022.

I have uploaded the file msqr0422.pdf to its appropriate file area
    on The Thunderbolt BBS.

While April 14, 2022 at 9pm is the deadline for the May, 2022 issue
of The Modern Square...this is also on Easter Weekend...with April 15
being Good Friday (never mind the income tax deadline), and April 17
    as Easter Sunday.

Some places will be closed on that day, so the release of the May,
2022 issue will be DELAYED until Monday, April 18. I'm hoping that
the print edition can still be done in time to be delivered to the
subscribers mailboxes prior to May 1. It will also allow me to get
items from the Bluebird Squares Lasagna Dinner And Dance, set for
April 16, into the May, 2022 issue.

In short, if dancers can get me items for the May issue by 9pm on
Sunday, April 17, they will make the May, 2022 issue. While May 14
(the deadline for the June, 2022 issue) is on Saturday, I plan to
release the June issue on May 15, 2022.

On another note, there is a CORRECTION in the street name where
the Twirling Funtimers dance in Lakeview. It's still at the Loyd
Travis Municipal Complex on Wednesday evenings (they're doing lessons
there on Sunday afternoon), the actual site is at 14 SKYLES Lane, and
NOT 14 Skyler Lane, in Lakeview. I confirmed that with club contacts
Ray and Linda Peacy earlier today.

Please email me at assdfmodernsquare at gmail dot com if you have
    any questions.

The print edition of the July, 2022 issue of The Modern Square, the
monthly publication of the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation (ASSDF), arrived in my mailbox this morning...it should be in subscriber's mailboxes shortly. The e-Edition was released on July 15, 2022 -- and is now on the
    ASSDF website at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/the-modern-square

The back print issue is now May, 2022 -- this 2 month delay keeps non-subscribers from accessing the print edition in a timely manner,
where subscribers are paying $20 a year for it. Those who did not get
the current issue of the print edition either never signed up for a print subscription...or their print subscription had previously expired. A form
to sign up or renew is in both the print edition and the e-Edition.

Work on the August, 2022 issue will begin on July 10, 2022 -- with the deadline for that issue on July 14, 2022.

On another note, an agenda for the 2022 ASSDF Fall Festival Oct. 6-8,
2022 in Clinton, along with fliers for the Trail-End Dinner and Dance
on Oct. 6, and a registration form for the main dancing on Oct. 7-8, are
all on the ASSDF website at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com under
    Upcoming Events.

Lastly, due to medical issues, I was forced to sell my car this week,
as it had become too dangerous for me to drive anymore (I had previously
given up driving at night...and now, have given up driving entirely).

So, my main dancing will be with the Maverick Mixers, or possibly
special dances at the American Legion Post 128 in Mabelvale (southwest
Little Rock) at 9925 Leah Lane, at the corner of Mann Road and Leah Lane.
As of now, I am NOT planning on going to the Fall Festival in Clinton
as noted above. Even if someone were to provide transportation, I'd be
at the mercy of their schedule...and if something were to occur at my residence, there'd be no way that I could get back in a timely manner.

Please email me at assdfmodernsquare at gmail dot com if you have
    any questions.

Well, like messing up a call on a dance floor, I didn't proofread
the messasge well enough on the release of the print edition of
The Modern Square that I posted yesterday.

    The e-Edition of the July, 2022 issue was released on June 15, 2022;
July 15, 2022, will be when the August, 2022 issue is released.

I guess I've been at the computer too much, and away from the dance
floor too long. But, since i sold my car this week due to medical
issues, dancing will be few and far between anymore.

The 2025 National Square Dance Convention (NSDC) was awarded to
Shreveport, Louisiana...with Ted and Tonia Hofmeister, current
presidents of the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation (ASSDF)
    as chairpersons.

I will place the URL and the early bird registration form on the
    ASSDF website (https://www.arkansassquaredance.com) under Upcoming
Events, as soon as I receive the information. The 74th NSDC will be
in Shreveport, Louisiana, June 25-28, 2025.

The National Executive Committee (NEC), which oversees the NSDC,
did not make an award for the 75th NSDC in 2026 as of yet. Info from
the 71st NSDC that was in Evansville, Indiana, has been removed from
the website, since that event is now in the past.

I have placed the long registration form for the 72nd NSDC, which
will be June 21-24, 2023, in Mobile, Alabama, on the page noted in
the above paragraph, along with their website. Also, there are links
to the website and an early registration form for the 73rd NSDC,
which will be June 26-29, 2024, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

As for the nearest upcoming NSDC, I will be posting information
files with press releases, and other items, on the same page noted earlier...once I receive the information. The long registration form
will be placed in the e-Edition of The Modern Square as well, which
one can get for free, by sending an email with their name and email
address, and a note they'd like the e-Edition to yours truly, the
current editor, at assdfmodernsquare at gmail dot com

There were only 4 club reports this month, but a good number of photos
in the e-Edition. The main emphasis this month is the ASSDF Fall Festival
in Clinton, Arkansas, Oct. 6-8, 2022...and the United Square Dancers Of
    America (USDA) Youth Scholarship Fund.

    The Advance Registration Deadline for the Fall Festival is Sept. 30;
after that, and at the door, it'll cost more to register...plus prices
for hotels/lodging, and RV camping will go up, and accommodations may
not be available. Health and financial issues preclude my attendance at
    the festival.

Work on the November, 2022 issue will begin after the ASSDF Fall

The ASSDF has learned that Tim Tyl did a two hour "This is how to go
about Recruiting, Teaching and Retaining New Dancers at the club level"
at this year's National Convention in Jackson, Mississippi.

Because he is coming in early on Friday, he volunteered to put this presentation on for anyone attending the Fall Festival.

With that intro, we have CHANGED the posted agenda on Friday afternoon,
October 7. The callers' workshop scheduled from 3pm to 5:30pm has been
MOVED UP to 1pm to 3pm. Tim will present his forum from 3pm to 4:30pm,
and the Plus workshop will be from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. Thanks for your understanding and support!!

I've placed a PDF file with the lodging/hotel and camping/RV info
(remember, the Advanced Registration Deadline is Friday, Sept. 30),
plus the agenda for Friday and Saturday, on the ASSDF website at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/events under UPCOMING EVENTS.
On that same page, are fliers for the Trail-End Dance (and Dinner),
as well as the Fall Festival Registration Form.

The ONLY CHANGE is the schedule for Friday afternoon...the Trail End
Dance (and Dinner) Thursday night, plus the Friday morning and Friday
evening, and the Saturday schedule (day and evening) HAVE NOT CHANGED.

I received the print edition of the October, 2022 issue of "The Modern
Square", the monthly publication of the Arkansas State Square Dance
Federation (ASSDF) in my Post Office Box today. It should be in the
    mailboxes of subscribers shortly.

If you don't receive one, either your subscription has expired, or you
never had one. There is still time to get a subscription started or
renewed for the November, 2022 issue, as that database won't go in until October 14...the deadline for the November, 2022 issue.

I show 14 print subscriptions expiring in December. I will send out the reminder notices on those in late October or early November. Those who
will be attending the ASSDF Fall Festival in Clinton next weekend (Oct.
6-8, 2022), will be able to sign up for, or renew their print subscription,
or sign up for an e-Edition subscription. Unfortunately, both health and financial issues preclude me from attending.

Work is in progress on the November, 2022 print and e-Edition, and while
I have a large number of photos so far for the e-Edition, I can't use
them all, due to space limitations...but one will be able to view these
    on the club's Facebook pages.

If you'd like a free e-Edition subscription, please send your name and

The November, 2022 issue of The Modern Square, the monthly publication
of the Arkansas State Square Dance Federation (ASSDF) will be released
late Sunday evening, Oct. 16, 2022. This is because since the printer,
    Arkansas Printing, wouldn't get to start on it until Monday, Oct. 17;
I decided to extend the deadline 48 hours...to 9pm Central Time, Oct. 16.

I will note that with needing, finding, and using filler material, the
print edition will be 16 pages...even with not many club reports. As I've noted, I feel that the 4 reasons reports aren't submitted, are as follows:

    1) The club isn't dancing (in which case, I don't expect a report).

    2) The club doesn't feel there's any "news" to report.

    3) The club reporter forgot to prepare or send in a report.

    4) The club doesn't have a reporter.

I can't force folks to send in reports, so if your club hasn't been submitting a report, and you're not happy about that...you need to talk
to the caller, cuer, officers, and members of that club...or you can be
the person to be club reporter. While I can grab photos from the various Facebook pages for the e-Edition, I'm not going to write the club reports
for a particular club. The only report I'm responsible for is for my home
    club, the Maverick Mixers.

The e-Edition, on the other hand, will be rather large. I have around
100 e-Edition photos, from several dances from mid-September through mid-October, including the ASSDF Fall Festival in Clinton...over 40
photos are from that event alone!! The e-Edition will likely be over
100 pages (in PDF format), and around 25 megabytes in size!! While I
will attach it to the email once I release it, it will also be available
for download on the ASSDF website, located at:

    https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/the-modern-square

As a side note, on the Facebook pages of Arkansas' Fall Festival, the Pioneers, Maverick Mixers, Heber Springers, and Square Dancing With Jay
King, you can find the photos that I had to edit out (I had so many to
choose from)...but there are also video links, especially with Arkansas'
    Fall Festival.

The November, 2022 issue of The Modern Square is released this evening,
Oct. 16, 2022. The 2 day delay was because the 14th fell on a Friday,
and with the 9pm deadline, Arkansas Printing wouldn't get to it until
Monday, Oct. 17, anyway. So, it gave time for some last minute things
    to arrive.

The PDF file is on the ASSDF website, which is located at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/the-modern-square -- The "back
print edition" (2 months old, to prevent non-subscribers from getting
it in a timely manner), is for September, 2022.

With the ASSDF Fall Festival recently, there were over 40 photos from
it alone, and over 60 photos from other dances since mid-September.
This made the e-Edition rather large...over 100 pages, with over 100 photos...and just over 13 megabytes in size. Last year, I had separated
the Fall Festival photos into a separate PDF file, but this year, I
decided to put everything into one file.

Originally, the print edition was going to be only 12 pages...but with
filler material...namely special dances for 2023 and beyond, I was able
to get the print edition up to 16 pages.

With the large amount of photos (which made up for only 3 club reports
that were submitted), several had to be left out. But, you can find all
the photos, and some videos in the Facebook groups of Arkansas' Fall
Festival, and the Square Dance Events page...as well as the Levi's And
Lace, Heber Springers, Pioneers, and Maverick Mixers Facebook club pages.
The only club reports were from the Maverick Mixers, Twirling Funtimers,
    and the Bluebird Squares.

Work on the December, 2022 issue will begin around November 10, with the deadline for items for it (the last one of 2022) on November 14. Reminder Letters for the print subscriptions expiring with the December, 2022
issue, will be mailed out in either late October, or early November.

2022. The PDF file is on the ASSDF website at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/the-modern-square

The "back print edition" (2 months old, to prevent non-subscribers from
getting it in a timely manner), is for October, 2022.

With the abundance of photos from 4 Halloween Dances, and from the
Twirling Lariats Graduation, plus recognition of 5 dancers who were
veterans, those were the featured photos this month. Note that if I had
just used photos emailed in, the e-Edition would've been much smaller...
and only slightly larger than the print edition.

UPDATE: I had originally planned to use the photos that I didn't use in
the issue for next month...but there were so many, and they'd be so far
behind in the club reports, that I decided to just "start over", photo
wise, for the January, 2023 issue.

Work on the January, 2023 issue will begin around December 10, with the deadline for items for it on December 14. Reminder Letters for the print subscriptions expiring with the January, 2023 issue, will be mailed out
in either late November, or early December...after the Thanksgiving Day
    Holiday Weekend.

The ASSDF wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

The January, 2023 issue of The Modern Square is released today, Dec. 15,
2022. The PDF file is on the ASSDF website at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/the-modern-square

The "back print edition" (2 months old, to prevent non-subscribers from
getting it in a timely manner), is for November, 2022.

A copy of available e-Editions is also available in the specific file
area here on The Thunderbolt BBS, with the filename msqr####.pdf --
where #### is the month (01-12) and year (last 2 digits) of the issue.
A PDF utility is required to view the files.

Work on the February, 2023 issue will begin around January 10, with the deadline for items for it on January 14. Reminder Letters for the print subscriptions expiring with the January, 2023 issue, will be mailed out
prior to Christmas. The utility crews are working on repairing a gas
leak in the neighborhood today, and since I don't drive anymore, I have
to take Lyft when I go out. I originally had planned to go out today,
but with the street closed off, that idea was nixed.

I'm planning a special Club Christmas Dance photo montage e-Edition,
to be released on Christmas Day, Dec. 25 -- with photos from several
ASSDF Club Christmas Dances, including those that were to be held
after the January, 2023 issue was released. I try to release things
by the middle of the month, to allow for printing, mailing, and then
delivery, of the print edition, before the first of the month, of the
    month of issue.

The ASSDF wishes everyone a safe and happy holiday season.

My apologies for the long message...but after reading this, I hope that
you'll understand why the message needed to be so long.

The February, 2023 issue of The Modern Square is released today, Jan. 16,
2023. The PDF file for it is now available on the ASSDF website at https://www.arkansassquaredance.com/the-modern-square -- and the print
copy has been released to the printer, Arkansas Printing, in Pine Bluff.
It should arrive in subscriber's mailboxes just before the first day of February, if all goes well.

The print edition for February, 2023 is 20 pages...with over 80 pages for
the e-Edition, with the numerous photos that were obtained via the various
club Facebook groups. Not all photos were used, but one can go to the
various Facebook groups to see all the photos, as well as the videos.

There were a few clubs that did NOT submit reports, or post anything on Facebook...so their reports will be conspicuous by their abscence. I can
NOT force clubs to submit reports...but there are four possible reasons
    why a report wasn't submitted.

    1) The club is DARK (not dancing)...in which case, I don't expect anything (reports or otherwise) to be submitted.

    2) The club doesn't feel there's any news to report.

    3) The reporter didn't send anything in.

    4) The club doesn't have a reporter. This is likely because, as with most
clubs and organizations today...there are too few members remaining, and
no one wants to do the work. I've heard several club officers tell me that about their membership. Clubs like this are eventually going to fold and disband, when there is no one wanting to work behind the scenes, as it
    were.

While active dancing for me anymore is EXTREMELY RARE (especially since I
no longer drive, due to vision issues), I am content to work behind the
scenes for the ASSDF, as Editor, Webmaster, and Circulation Chairman...as
well as Reporter and Chaplain for the Maverick Mixers Club in Little Rock.

Clubs who make the CHOICE to NOT post anything on Facebook, or to send in anything, will have no right to complain, if no one shows up for their
dances (regular or special), lessons, etc. -- because without them telling anyone outside their club, no one but their club members will know what's
    going on.

    And, if they end up doing a big dance, but they didn't tell anyone else;
and somehow word gets out...that club likely will NEVER have any visitors
ever again. Basically, if you don't have at least a square of four couples
at a dance...NOBODY GETS TO DANCE...and all who've come, have then "wasted
    a trip".

The "back print edition" (2 months old, to prevent non-subscribers from
getting it in a timely manner), is for December, 2022. The link for that
is on the same page. The previous print edition (November, 2022) has been removed from the ASSDF website.

A copy of available e-Editions is also available in the specific file
area here on The Thunderbolt BBS, with the filename msqr####.pdf --
where #### is the month (01-12) and year (last 2 digits) of the issue.
A PDF utility is required to view the files.

Work on the March, 2023 issue will begin around February 10, with the
deadline for items for it on February 14. Reminder Letters for the print subscriptions expiring with the March, 2023 issue, will be mailed out on
Feb. 15. There are no print edition subscription expirations noted for
    the month of February.

Note that we're down to only 31 print subscriptions now (we were down to
24 in October, 2019). With continued declining print subscriptions, and ads...along with the continued increase in costs for both postage and printing...the days of the print edition may be numbered.

There are at least 10 print edition subscribers who are getting that
ONLY (no e-Edition with it)...likely because they don't have, can't get,
or don't want a computer or internet access. These would be hurt the most
if the print edition is eliminated...although some parts of Arkansas are
so rural, that it's very difficult at present to get internet or phone
    service.

While the ASSDF Board has approved a LOSS of $500 to keep the print
edition going...without subscriptions or ads, it may be just a matter
of time before the print edition is no more.

Many other publications have gone online only, or shut down entirely...
because of the high costs of postage and printing...and in some cases,
with delivery issues from the Postal Service. Even though the ASSDF no
longer is on the Periodicals Rate, it pays First Class Postage for each
print edition mailed out. Tthe average First Class Postage price is now
60 cents...and it costs more than that per print edition mailed out. And,
that mailing cost is likely to continue increasing.

We have just over 130 e-Edition subscribers, with 2 dozen of those
taking the print edition as well; the rest just take the e-Edition only.

While the print edition is $20 a year, the e-Edition (at least for now)
is free...although subscribers are requested to make a $5 donation to
help offset the yearly costs of webhosting...which include the licensing
fee for Microsoft Word (to prepare The Modern Square), the webhosting fee
for Wix, plus the domain fee, and security fees to protect the site from
both hacking and data loss, among other things. The latter fees are what
ALL websites must pay. Some subscribers have already made that $5 fee
donation, or have paid the cost of a print subscription, but have noted
that they just want the e-Edition.

If we eventually go to the e-Edition only, the following things are most
likely to be done (although all of these would have to be approved by the
    ASSDF Executive Board first):

    1) Current subscribers with a print edition, would receive a prorated
refund from the ASSDF. This averages out to approxmiately $1.67 per
issues remaining. If they have 10 months left on their subscripton,
they would receive around $16.70 -- if they have 5 months left, they'd
receive around $8.35 for the remaining print subscription.

    2) A separate email list would be set up for e-Edition subscribers for
a $5 yearly e-Edition subscription. This averages out to around 42 cents
    a month...you can't get a beverage or even a biscuit for that!!

It's hoped that legitimate e-Edition subscribers would NOT "share"
their copy electronically with non-subscribers. The cost of paper and
printing (the ink cartridges, black and color), can become extremely
expensive. The last I checked, a 2 pack (1 black and 1 color print
cartridge) for my Canon MG-2100 printer, is around $75...and it could
    take 2 of those (4 total) just to print one e-Edition ($150 total);
especially if there are a large amount of color photos.

Reminder emails would be sent out to e-Edition subscribers, similar to
the printed letters that are mailed out to print edition subscribers
now, from 4 to 6 weeks before their e-Edition subscription was to expire.
This would be handled by the Editor, Webmaster, and Circulation Chairman.

    3) The e-Edition would also receive the same "2 month delay" as the
print edition does now, on the website...to prevent non-subscribers
from getting it in a timely manner.

    4) Back issues for the e-Edition would remain online, once released.
Back issues of the print edition would be for one particular month
only, then replaced when a new release occurs.

    5) With the elimination of the print edition, with yours truly (Daryl
Stout) as Editor (I don't see a rush for folks wanting the job!!), the
deadline for items would be MOVED until 9pm US Central Time, on the last Saturday of the month. Then, after things are finalized, it would be
emailed out to paying subscribers. Notices would be posted in the
Square Dance Events group on Facebook, and via email. Note that all
submissions would need to be emailed to assdfmodernsquare@gmail.com
or noted on the various Facebook pages, so they can be obtained.

    6) If the email address bounces (similar to the mailing address for the
print edition), the subscription would be SUSPENEDED until the Editor, Webmaster, and Circulation Chairman, is contacted by the subscriber,
with the correct information. Otherwise, it's UNKNOWN where to send it.
The subscriber will NOT receive a refund or subscription extension for
    missed issues.

If the email address is correct, then the ISP is likely placing the
issue in their spam folder. Subscribers should be sure that if they
are receiving the e-Edition that they have assdfmodernsquare@gmail.com
    in their email "whitelist".

As soon as you think something is wrong with your print or e-Edition subscription, DO NOT WAIT to contact the Editor, Webmaster, and
Circulation Chairman. If there's a problem, and you don't contact
these people, then it appears that nothing is wrong. It is NOT the
job of the Editor, Webmaster, and Circulation Chairman, to contact
a club for a report, etc., or for a subscriber if their item bounces.
That is the responsibility of the individual subscriber. Also, if you
have a question or problem with your subscription, I want YOU to be
the one to contact me. Otherwise, the information is "second hand",
and if that's wrong, it could take longer to fix the problem. The ONLY
time I should get information "second hand" is to report the death of
a subscriber, so the applicable subscription(s) can be canceled.

As for dances themselves, no matter the time of year, one is STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to CALL BEFORE YOU TRAVEL. Last minute cancellations for many reasons can, and do occur. Checking before you travel can ensure that you
don't "make the trip in vain/for nothing". And obviously, if you don't
feel well on a dance night (illness), or if bad weather is an issue
(either severe weather, flooding, or winter weather), please stay home!!

Folks who have questions can email me at assdfmodernsquare@gmail.com --
I will reply as soon as possible.
