Maybe you are not linked to the IC-echo, I recently posted "this":

That's the count of unique sysop names in the nodelist. Remember. somewhere in the 90-ies we were over 36.000 and a pile of points beyond belief.

And here's a different reality for zone-2.

It is down to 230 sysop names if we don't consider R50.

It is down to 152 sysop names if we don't consider R45 R46 R50, and then their home countries are even involved in an all-out war.

The question is how many of these 152 are "live"? Let me guess .... 50? 60? There are bunches of people in the nodelist who just have a VPN somewhere and don't bother to watch it. There are people if I need to reach them I need to email them or try Messenger. You can netmail them, but nobody's home.

This is the thing ... there's so much dead wood in the nodelist, the critical mass for a sustained survivability has evaporated, several echoes have already dried-up and came to a churning stop.

That's the reality ... we are a dying breed and bless the simple of minds who believe there is growth again if a lost sysop from 25 years ago pops up for a moment.

I've run the BBS on a box in my house since 1991, and there's a level of comfort knowing it's right there. That being said, I've had a cheap VPS for some time that I've wanted to move the BBS to; If I migrate the BBS over to Linux I'd probably make the move - if anything, to get out of running
servers on a home cable connection and being able to host mail directly instead of jumping through hoops to get past a port 25 block.

Shout to Raw Bandwidth in the San Francisco bay area - an ISP run by a tech for techs. Static IPs, no blocked ports, secondary DNS, no frills, but consistent. It was like having DSL from the carrier but having your own personal tech to make sure things worked.

And you're right, I would need to "upgrade" to business internet for a static IP. That being said, I've had this same IP for about the last year, it has changed on occasion in the past, but not very often. My IPv6 prefix changes far more often than my IPv4 address.

Its worked here for years now... before that at my other apartment I had Rogers business with nothing blocked either - but their own IPV4 static IP's had trouble connecting to their own IPV6 blocks. At my old address Bell is offering 1.5Gb down & 940Mb up for $89.99 /mo while Rogers cable here is 1Gb down & 30Mb up for $112 /mo. Bell only offers wireless internet at my current address (25Mb down, 5Mb up for $60 /mo).

I suspect, as Nick mentioned, that they would offer me an open port 25 if I wanted to pay for it, so I am suspecting that would be their defense.

The way it was designed to sit just under the stairwell was very neat and clean... even enough room to slide in a standard 19" rack unit if necessary.

I just recently had to re-terminate one of those for a friend - Great idea, poor execution. Looks like they had the electrician terminate the panel and the jacks.

I recently had two Cat 6 runs put between floors between my office upstairs and the downstairs bedroom where the cable modem is. I think anyone with a mesh wireless network would be better doing similar - with 1 wireless router on the cable modem and one on the other end of the ethernet as an access
point all of my network woes are long gone.

Before that I was using extenders and powerline adapters. It mostly worked, but in retrospect I should have ditched them years ago.

The Nokia media gateway that comes with the Bell fiber install expects Vlan-tagging, which most off the shelf routers cannot do on the WAN
side of things. But Pfsense does it perfectly...

I'd like to go with AT&T Fiber, but trucks keep pulling down my next-door neighbor's fiber. I'm a little leery of getting it at my house. I'm running OpenWRT on an appliance router, it'll handle VLANs just fine.

It's fairly common to block port 24 here to force a commercial account. I shifted to port 25 to get around it.

Yup. BTW I said port 24 a minute ago, meant port 23 (telnet). Cox cable did that 3 years ago and we dropped them. A year later they refused to host email at a reduced price and required you pay the full pagage ans swap back to them. I got rid of cox for good.

I honestly don't know how much of our constitution-protected civil-rights applies to non-citizens, but that wasn't really the point of my message. My point was: corporations are free to censor, so long as its not based on "protected categories" (e.g. race, religion, gender).
