The volcanic eruption on Sunday in Iceland is not yet causing any disruption to air traffic between Reykjavik and places. The volcano is located in the southwest of the island near the town of Grindavik, close to the capital Reykjavik and not far from Keflavík International Airport (KEF).

The lava from the eruption has reached the first houses of the village of Grindavík, images show.

In March 2021, air traffic in Iceland was briefly disrupted in a similar situation.

Iceland lies on the border of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates, making the country a hotspot for volcanic activity. This translates into varied natural beauty, geysers, volcanoes and hot springs.

In 2010, the eruption of Eyjafjallajökull caused major problems. Ash particles in the air closed the airspace above Europe for days, causing tens of thousands of flights to be canceled and travelers stranded.
