Hi Folks!
Had an issue where my system wouldn't play certain *.MKV video files.
In properties noted the ones that did had the VP9 codec and the ones
which did not the AV1. A bit of Google-fu: initial hit from 2018 looked
a little too-fiddly but the one from a little over a month ago did the
trick:
The good news is that it is relatively easy to get both playback and
encoding with AV1 under Ubuntu 18.04:
1. Playback: The repository vlc will not play AV1 files but if
you install the snap version you will have that capability.
Run the following from a Terminal:
sudo snap install vlc
Currently this will give you vlc 3.0.8 with AV1 playback capability.

One problem I noted was now I have two VLC options listed in the "select
other application" and I can't tell my original from the new - one works
and one doesn't (with the AV1 format). My guess would be one
could/should uninstall the original VLC before installing the snap
version but I'm not sure if regular VLC does something the snap version
does not. (Is there a way to alter the displayed title?)
