As of 9-30-24 I will be dropping dial up service which
hasn't been used in a very long time. My internet service will
be changing to a higher speed plan. I may need to change to new
router. So there may be some down time while I tweek the new
router if my current one doesn't work under the new speed /

I have wrestled with the idea of maybe dropping mine but have not
done so yet. I do seem to get folks trying to call but, as my phone
company has "upgraded" from copper wiring to cable, most are not
successful unless they throttle back to 2400 or less.
Same here I have had only one caller that calls every 6 months and
has trouble getting connected. I think my modem is on its way out
sometimes its doesn't respond hand shake when call is detected. I was ditching tv service getting to expensive and figured I drop the dial up
line due to low use. My verizon bill will go from 157 a month down to
49.99 a month. All the tv and phone taxes go away a well. No taxes on internet in NJ. I am going from 50/50 to 300/300 on internet.
I may toy arround with my Magic Jack voice line to see if I can get
that to work with dialup. If that works I may get another magic jack
line and bring dialup back. I could see spending 3 -4 dollars a month
but not 30 dollars from verizon.

Here's a strange question: did you install a new modem? Back in my
dial-up dates I replaced a modem to get to (probably) 56K. Booted up: super-slow baud rate (in fact I think it was 2400 but don't recall).
Checked connections, etc.
Same brand modem, should be the same AT codes, right? Wrong! One of
the old commands was now used to force modem connections at 2400 (or
whatever speed I was getting.) Corrected the command -- wheeeeee!!

I did install a new one, but only after I started having major
problems.
I did have to change some AT commands. I actually have added
something to the init string to try to limit the speed on calls
because I know anything above 14.4k is likely not going to work.
This modem will only allow me to restrict to 9600 so that is
where I have it set. If I try to restrict to 14.4 or 19.2, it
will allow calls up to 56k which I know won't work! :D
That said, unlike previous USR modems I have had, I do not think
that setting affects inbound calls, which means that callers can
try to call at whatever speed they want.
