Subject: Christian Fellowship BBS Downtime / Removal of Dialup

    Hi Michael!

As of 9-30-24 I will be dropping dial up service which
hasn't been used in a very long time. My internet service will
be changing to a higher speed plan. I may need to change to new
router. So there may be some down time while I tweek the new
router if my current one doesn't work under the new speed /

Have fun! Stock up on coffee, reasonably healthy comfort/let-the-steam-
off food (like peanuts: their resistance-crunch helps dispurse the
    feelings of aggrivation! <g>).

I have wrestled with the idea of maybe dropping mine but have not done so
yet. I do seem to get folks trying to call but, as my phone company has "upgraded" from copper wiring to cable, most are not successful unless they throttle back to 2400 or less.

Same here I have had only one caller that calls every 6 months and
has trouble getting connected. I think my modem is on its way out
sometimes its doesn't respond hand shake when call is detected. I was
ditching tv service getting to expensive and figured I drop the dial up
line due to low use. My verizon bill will go from 157 a month down to
49.99 a month. All the tv and phone taxes go away a well. No taxes on
internet in NJ. I am going from 50/50 to 300/300 on internet.

I may toy arround with my Magic Jack voice line to see if I can get
that to work with dialup. If that works I may get another magic jack
line and bring dialup back. I could see spending 3 -4 dollars a month
but not 30 dollars from verizon.

Sounds like a pretty good deal overall. I think we do have taxes on
    internet here.

I have MJ service. My jack has quit working, though, or I might play
around with it and see what kind of service I get. I got to where I was
using their app on an old cell phone I have for my "home phone" service and have never got around to ordering a new jack.

Here's a strange question: did you install a new modem? Back in my
dial-up dates I replaced a modem to get to (probably) 56K. Booted up: super-slow baud rate (in fact I think it was 2400 but don't recall).
    Checked connections, etc.

Same brand modem, should be the same AT codes, right? Wrong! One of
the old commands was now used to force modem connections at 2400 (or
whatever speed I was getting.) Corrected the command -- wheeeeee!!

I did install a new one, but only after I started having major problems.

I did have to change some AT commands. I actually have added something to
the init string to try to limit the speed on calls because I know anything above 14.4k is likely not going to work. This modem will only allow me to restrict to 9600 so that is where I have it set. If I try to restrict to
14.4 or 19.2, it will allow calls up to 56k which I know won't work! :D

That said, unlike previous USR modems I have had, I do not think that
setting affects inbound calls, which means that callers can try to call at whatever speed they want.

Good reason to get a new one! <g>

I'm thinking take a good look at the AT strings: maybe one is
conflicting or inserted incorrectly - periods and commands can look
alike. The other thing is if copied and pasted from 'typewritten' notes
the fonts don't always play nice. Here I copy command strings from
forums, etc., but a quote marks and hyphens usually don't transfer to
Terminal properly: LibreOffice will make the opening and closing
double-quote pair 'fancy' with the upward or downward pointings -- command-line stuff doesn't know what to do with those (think they
display angled; want the vertical version). The double hyphen (--) is translated to a long hyphen by LibreOffice.

It might be good to write down the current AT string(s) and 'translate'
to what they mean. The mechanical work causes the brain to think in a different path and sometimes picks up errors overlooked the 'eyeball-
    looking' way.

That said, unlike previous USR modems I have had, I do not think
that setting affects inbound calls, which means that callers can
try to call at whatever speed they want.

I don't recall after all these years!

...I'm going to send you an old article I've kept. May or may not help diagnose the error. Would have sent just the link here but just checked
and no longer: domain is for sale. (Or why my hard drive gets filled
with stuff 'available on the Internet'.)
