He's a former professor of computer science (or something like, at
Nottingham no less -- used to ride the same public transit as the
Periodic Videos guy!) and is now a professional presenter. So he has a
full set of clues on how not to dwell on the boring parts. :)

Unlike a few I could name, who spend WAY too much time filming the

While back Chris had one comparing various SD card options that was so
useful, I printed out the results chart to carry with me for when I next
    buy SD cards.

Oh yeah, I've seen that too. If they were writing a novel, they'd be the
kind who can't figure out how to write action, so instead of showing the fight, they show the argument and then cut to talking about the bleeding bodies.

and here's another with info on different types of current SD cards,
    including the numerous speed classes:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUResed38uo

Hmm. I note that the slower Sandisk SD card is made in China, and the
faster one is made in Taiwan.

Got a laugh from one of the comments... "this man looks like a cross

A fair generalization for flash storage is that higher capacity is

And the mistakes are just as informative.

There's a guy who does detailed product comparisons (stuff like tools,
fuel additives, duct tape, tire patches, etc etc) who also sometimes,
uh, shows his work -- "Project Farm" on Youtube. He talks fast and works
fast and you have to be paying attention, but there's sure no fat in the
    vids.

EngelsCoachShop (who is about 20 miles from me) also sometimes 'shows

Yeah, tho sad to say they seem to have 'fixed' that. Joke is still on
them... there's a Youtube ad blocker for Chrome. <g> And I'm that much
more likely to go off to Invidio.us instead (Youtube relay site), where
the ads cannot follow. I wouldn't mind if it was short ads fore and aft
(and if most weren't either noisy-stupid or for outright scams), but
I've seen a 30 minute unskippable ad in front of a 5 minute video, and
that's when I said screw you. Oh, and if you leave the page up after
your vid is done, after a while it will often start playing ads
    continuously.

That camera shop in NYC (the famous one whose name I can't remember)
actually did an ad so right that they had a huge number of viewers
follow the ad back to their own channel, and play it again. It's not
often you see an AD with a million independent views, when it's just a
normal "here we are and what we do" and nothing funny about it.

Yeah, it's still gotta be within capacity for the internal drivers.
Someone gift me a middle-aged (well, newer'n mine) digital camera --
Sony Cybershot -- and was astonished to discover that it maxes out at a
32GB SD card... my old one takes 64GB no problem. The Sony is also very

Sort of an element of surprise: normally application is associated with

And the mistakes are just as informative.

With him being experiencd (or at least more so than most watching) the
viewer would expect to see the direct journey to the final finished
product rather than the one with the detours of routes which didn't
quite work out. Plus most of the time any errors have been removed from
the final video, relegated to the blooper reels.

EngelsCoachShop (who is about 20 miles from me) also sometimes

known issue or something you should report?

Known issue. I don't recall why two mini-HDMI ports nor if the second
one has sound after the first one is used. And I'm not the only one to
have fallen into the trap. Don't have an RPi 4 manual handy but do
recall the manual that came with the kit I purchased did have a comment
on using the port closest to the power plug. Of course I read that
after! Did look at the diagram with the parts and ports location but
that didn't say anything other than 'HDMI' -- "HDMI 1" and "HDMI 2"
    would have been helpful.

...Did look online a little: the ports are marked on the PC board HDMI0
and HDMI1. I find those identifications difficult to read when the case
is surrounding. <g> And the RPi4 will do two monitors out of the box,
    so double the screen space!

still on them... there's a Youtube ad blocker for Chrome. <g>
And I'm that much more likely to go off to Invidio.us instead
(Youtube relay site), where the ads cannot follow. I wouldn't
mind if it was short ads fore and aft (and if most weren't either noisy-stupid or for outright scams), but I've seen a 30 minute
unskippable ad in front of a 5 minute video, and that's when I
said screw you. Oh, and if you leave the page up after your vid
is done, after a while it will often start playing ads
    continuously.

Oh goodie! And yes, a half-hour ad is way too much! Equates to an informercial on TV. Regular ads are usually only 30 seconds. If a
    minute it better be entertaining!

That camera shop in NYC (the famous one whose name I can't
remember) actually did an ad so right that they had a huge number
of viewers follow the ad back to their own channel, and play it
again. It's not often you see an AD with a million independent
views, when it's just a normal "here we are and what we do" and
    nothing funny about it.

Now that's a good ad! I have found some TV ads to be worthy of watching several times -- some of the Progressive insurance, GEICO insurance..,
we started watching the cavemand TV show because of the ads: how are

Though that occasionally backfires: haven't tried with the RPi 4 but the older Pi's took forever to boot with a large capacity card.
Yeah, it's still gotta be within capacity for the internal
drivers. Someone gift me a middle-aged (well, newer'n mine)
digital camera -- Sony Cybershot -- and was astonished to
discover that it maxes out at a 32GB SD card... my old one takes
64GB no problem. The Sony is also very slow on still shots (like,
on par with my 15 year old Olympus, er, Fujifilm 200), but much
faster on video shots. Well, I guess we know which job it gets!

Yup! ...Because of the past experiences with slow loading/booting and
the file system barrier I've pretty much have stayed with 32 GB and

-- or 5 -- depends when I get around to it! Right now no projects

Well, I took a quick look and didn't see if sound would come out of the
second HDMI port. Would make sense if didn't: seems the RPi4 was made
with dual monitors in mind and so they would be side by side: only need
sound from one monitor (though I'd prefer left audio from the left
speaker of the left monitor and right audio from the right speaker of
the right monitor). Even if configured for mirroring monitors probably npormally too close together to want individual audio outputs.

Yeah, FAT32 has a 4GB limit, and the copy will either fail or truncate
at that point. I always just reformat 'em as NTFS, that way no such
limit and they work with everything (except DOS, but DOS doesn't do USB gracefully anyway).

Back to the 'stay with 32 GB' comment, wasn't a capacity issue but

more of an issue with the old Raspberry Pi's -- slower processor, etc.

I think there's a hardware incompatibility in some USB3 drives, at least
vs middle-aged PCs; it seems to trigger at old capacity boundaries. I've
had problems with flash drives larger than 128GB, where they get so slow
they look hung (it may be reverting to USB1 speed, because if you wait
long enough -- like 15 minutes -- eventually the copy finishes). Some
BIOSs had a 64GB barrier and might behave similarly with larger flash
drives. Don't know why there'd be an issue with 32GB, other than the
FAT32 issue, but an old USB chip might have any number of peculiar ideas.**

Might just be the old Pi's 32bit ARM processor, which was no speed demon
and may have had limits that don't apply to the rest of the computing
    world.

Chris did a speed test of 32bit vs 64bit Pi OS, and the 64bit was about
2.5 times faster on the same CPU-intensive operation. (Per my benchmarks
on random PCs, I find 64bit OS runs about 40% faster than 32bit OS.
    Definitely an advantage here!)

** Such as the AMD boards that have USB2, but during boot it only
functions as USB1. Slower to boot from flash than from CD or floppy!
Never seen this with Intel, but several times with AMD, so probably a
defect in the associated and often crappy chipset.

    Hi Ky!

Chris has a new video comparing various OSs for x64 RPi: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80CU1j36Q6s

Thanks! Think I'll wait until the 64-bit Raspi OS comes out -- didn't
realize (guess more pay attention) to the 32 or 64 bit option -- usually
    I just stick in a 64-bit installer, if that doesn't work use a 32-bit
one. With the RPi hadn't paid attention - just installs

He's a bit behind on KDE vs XFCE, tho -- there's no longer much
difference in resources required (about 100mb RAM), and KDE is a
    lot better optimized.

Not disagreeing, just at this point not really needing to switch. (That
    could change!)

I still love how his punky pi looks!

:) My concern for doing something like that here is the cpu fan or
    something else getting hit.

Oops!! Similar but not quite as good was a male anchor on WBZ-TV
(Boston) was 'made' to get out from behind the desk at the end of the
news: suit jacket, shirt and tie on top - shorts and sandals on the
    lower supposed-to-be-hidden bottom.
Well, at least he was fully dressed! they'd come in fully dressed
but due to the oven-like qualities of the studio, had shucked
    their pants...

Haven't been in a studio in ages but was a little warm and I was sitting
in the back in the shadows.

And locally (WOC-TV) a klutzy lanky meteorologist. At the time used a
wall panel map and the Iowa/Illinois portion was pushed out to
emphasize. He crossed over and was a little too close so got pushed by
the map section, lost his balance and fell of the platform!
    That took talent :D

Yup! Few other 'fun' bloopers: old-old days they'd prop up a card the
weather satellite picture was printed on on a small easel. I think the
card was only 4x6" but with the close-up filled the screen. Every so
often it would slip off or a breeze knock it off -- good news is with
the close-up just a blurred background, though once in a while would see
a hand catching or putting the card back up.

OK, thanks. Have a bunch of older flash drives in various physical
formats. Know some are FAT32 and they're fine except when copying large video files -- only get the first 4 GB! At the time 4 GB would be everything but the last ten or fifteen minutes of the show -- what
    the...!!!
Yeah, FAT32 has a 4GB limit, and the copy will either fail or
truncate at that point. I always just reformat 'em as NTFS, that
way no such limit and they work with everything (except DOS, but
DOS doesn't do USB gracefully anyway).

Yup: first few times the file was truncated thought maybe the thumbdrive
was faulty or something had gone wrong with the copy. Looked up and
found out about the 4 GB limit; formatted and solved that problem!

Back to the 'stay with 32 GB' comment, wasn't a capacity issue but
loading speed. Not recalling or even sure if I know the format of the
64 GB cards but the problem was it took f-o-r-e-v-e-r to load (boot
time), and I think also bring up the file utility (Thunar?). Could be
more of an issue with the old Raspberry Pi's -- slower processor, etc.
I think there's a hardware incompatibility in some USB3 drives,
at least vs middle-aged PCs; it seems to trigger at old capacity boundaries. I've had problems with flash drives larger than
128GB, where they get so slow they look hung (it may be reverting
to USB1 speed, because if you wait long enough -- like 15 minutes
-- eventually the copy finishes). Some BIOSs had a 64GB barrier
and might behave similarly with larger flash drives. Don't know
why there'd be an issue with 32GB, other than the FAT32 issue,
but an old USB chip might have any number of peculiar ideas.**

Might just be the old Pi's 32bit ARM processor, which was no
speed demon and may have had limits that don't apply to the rest
    of the computing world.

floppy! Never seen this with Intel, but several times with AMD,
so probably a defect in the associated and often crappy chipset.

All that could be: had more or less figured the 32 GB SD card was the
maximum the older Pi's liked to work with at a speed I liked. Haven't
tried with the RPi4 as so far don't need the additional storage space.

As for that l-o-n-g pause, don't recall which size but probably more the
16- to 32 GB range as that's the largest capacities of thumbdrives I
have. (Talking the 'stick', not the little card the RPi's use.) Did
copy some large files for sneakernet and get towards the end of the copy process and looked like the process had stalled but just running
    really-really slowly.

game to watch, and that game would gain a Nielsen point!

That brought back an incomplete memory: at the time I was a teenager and
took apart defective TVs and radios for their parts. Had a CRT needed
to put out in the trash -- Dad and I knew it was unsafe just to put out curbside ==> fall over, crack the neck, glass all over the place.
Similar if the trashman picks up by neck to swing into the truck.
Recall we put the tube into an old trash can but seems we also broke the
vacuum -- how we did that I don't recall. Seems the seal was slowly
broken as I recall hearing a hiss but I don't recall doing it and doubt
Dad or I would risk being that close to potential flying glass. Firing
a gun - probably not as in the city, though there was a big hill and
    woods behind the back yard.
