Wonder if they'd be interested in analyzing it to see what they did
right, and compare to what failed in that era.

I doubt it, since they haven't made HDs in ages.

Have you tried any sort of recovery utility like SpinRite?

Ha. It'll make a special wind chime. :)

Have you tried any sort of recovery utility like SpinRite?

No. It's not the platter at fault, far as I can tell, and that's what
SpinRite addresses -- bad sectors on the platter.

    Made a strange discovery yesterday:

That system had routinely complained "no 80 wire cable" for the
secondary IDE channel. So while I was in there replacing the HD, I'd
replaced the 40 wire with an 80 wire to shut it up.

And then DOS can't see the DVD drive on that cable. The BIOS sees it,
the driver loads (both parts), but "drive R is not available". After
much thrashing around I checked the cable.. nope, it's in there good,
and there's nothing wrong with it or the driver wouldn't load, and
besides, the cable came out of a working system. Well, crap. Swapped it
back to the 40 wire (tho not the same one) and now all is well again.

80 wire normally works fine with DVD drives. WTF?

But! As a bonus, the bootup whine about "no 80 wire cable" has gone away!

IMO advertising is fine but leave it to the side of the main article,
not stick it in the product like CNet, SourceForge and probably a few
others are doing with their installers. Thanks for the reference, I'll download from these sites even less (sometimes they are the only

Yeah, and very often your choices are
    1) Sourceforge
    2) Somewhere worse
    3) Nowhere else

When possible I pull files direct from the author's site, but not
    everyone hosts their own files.

And come to mention it, we probably need to pull Fusion off of there, if

True. Seems like self-hosting opens up their computers to a bit of risk
    from hackers.

I didn't mean on their home system. I meant on their web host, the same

with a big and unexpected bandwidth bill. So a lot of 'em prefer to host downloads with Sourceforge etc.

True, though I could see where a small-time home programmer would figure
