Based on what you described some sort of read/write/buffer failure seems
to make sense. ...I'm tangentally thinking of solid state drives and
how long they will last. (Probably not at all the same.)

Wonder if they'd be interested in analyzing it to see what they did
right, and compare to what failed in that era.

It has no cache, but if an electronic gate is clogging up, so to
speak... that's how it acts, anyway. Going to become a wind
chime, methinks. I have a whole boxful of old small drives that
don't have issues, so it's not special.
Hi Ky!
Buit is is special: it's been with you for 18 years!
Have you tried any sort of recovery utility like SpinRite?

Speaking of CNet adding adware/malware to installer packages --
since SourceForge was acquired by Dice Holdings, they've been
doing the same -- and worse, hijacking major projects: https://soylentnews.org/article.pl?sid=15/05/28/091238

IMO advertising is fine but leave it to the side of the main article,
not stick it in the product like CNet, SourceForge and probably a few
others are doing with their installers. Thanks for the reference, I'll
download from these sites even less (sometimes they are the only
source).

I'm having an identity crisis. <g>

Yeah, and very often your choices are
1) Sourceforge
2) Somewhere worse
3) Nowhere else
When possible I pull files direct from the author's site, but not
everyone hosts their own files.
And come to mention it, we probably need to pull Fusion off of
there, if it hasn't already been "Claimed".

Suppose there are worse problem!

And I'll bet there will be more added to the list.

True. Seems like self-hosting opens up their computers to a bit of risk
from hackers.

?? Assuming a download site though Googling didn't verify/suggest:
nuclear fusion, Fusion TV network, VMware Fusion (run Windows on
Mac)....

Like being myself? :D

I didn't mean on their home system. I meant on their web host,
the same as hosts their website. If a download gets popular that
can leave you with a big and unexpected bandwidth bill. So a lot
of 'em prefer to host downloads with Sourceforge etc.

Fusion the modified DOOM game engine.

That for starters!<g>

Expected flat fees can be easier on the budget than sudden spikes.

Yeah. Especially when we're talkin' hundreds or even thousands of
dollars!
