Based on what you described some sort of read/write/buffer failure seems
to make sense. ...I'm tangentally thinking of solid state drives and
how long they will last. (Probably not at all the same.)
Which is amazing because if there's one place IBM failed
spectacularly, it was in hard drives (remember the fractured
platter issue?). This is the only live IBM HD I've ever seen!
Wonder if they'd be interested in analyzing it to see what they did
right, and compare to what failed in that era.
