Has anyone tried the new Magicjack Plus?

You can use it with or without a computer, it needs ac power and ethernet connection if used without a computer.

They are offering it to me at a special 1/2 price of $34.95 with 1 yr
    service.

It is handy for folks who don't use windows, though. You have to connect
it to a Windows XP or greater machine once, get it registered, and then you don't need the PC any more. My father wanted one for Christmas, and that
is how I got his set up. So far he is happy, but he's only had it a couple
    of weeks.

If he likes it, I might get one to replace my voice line. Also, I got it
set up and tested out some before I gave it to him. I was able to make a modem-to-modem BBS call with that line also.

I got one for my mom as she doesn't have any available USB ports on her computer. The MJ+ works great for her; I got the same $40 offer (since I
have the original MJ myself) and we're thinking about getting it and transferring our existing # to it (if MagicJack permits this and then activating the original MJ with a new number for a relative to use..

We've had the MagicJack service for probably 3 years now; nary a hiccup

I just ordered something called Ooma which was being featured by
Woot! for $145 today. It is a VOIP system which supposedly is 100%
free of phone charges for life--I just have to pay gov't mandated
taxes of $3.75/mo but everything else is free. That gives one
line, caller id, voice mail etc, etc, etc. It plugs directly into
the router--no computer needed for it to work.

At first I just poo-poo'd it as being too expensive. Then I read
the thousands of RAVE reviews from users about the clarity of
calls, quality of service, ease of us, free long distance, etc.,
so I sprang for one. If it works as it says it will, it will have
    a 6 month payback.

It will be here in about a week so after I get it hooked up, I will
report back for those that might be inerested.

I bought the Ooma for a friend when it was $250 and took it back to

I'd be interested in what your experience is. Was doing some 'research'
about a year or so ago on this kind of alternative phone service; Ooma
(never heard of it before then) was rated better than MagicJack but at
the time I couldn't make up my mind.

Using the cell phone when the land line is tied up here was acceptable
(though a little expensive) and now back to a situation where cheap long distance would be useful.

To refresh your memory, Woot! had the Ooma Telo on sale for
$140+$5 shipping. Before ordering, I compared prices on Amazon (over
$200) and read literally hundreds of customer reviews, I'd say 95%
of which were positive. The reasons the other 5% gave for not
liking it related to-IMO-not RTFM. So I bought it.

The reviewers also said it was head-and-shoulders above MagicJack
    or Vonage in calling clarity.

It arrived about 10 days later. Before plugging it in, Ooma asked
me to get on their website, register the device and pick a phone
number. I was also asked whether or not I wanted to port my old
number over to Ooma--a one time fee of $40. This took less than 15
    minutes.

I've had it for about 2 weeks now and frankly I cannot tell the
difference in quality between the Ooma service and my current
Windstream landline--I have both until Ooma can port my old number
over to Ooma so I am in a good position to compare. They also
provide computer software to allow me to setup and edit a contact
list for caller ID plus listing all calls in and out, incl. times
and person called/calling. My current phone hardware is an ATT cordless/answering machine with 7 cordless extensions which
communicate with the base on 2.4mHz. I get a clear dial tone and
have clear conversations on all the extensions. I was initially a
little worried about this as I *think* my ethernet router is on
the same freq but so far, no problems. I plug the modem CAT6 cable
into Ooma and plug the Ooma CAT6 cable into the router. My router
is a Dlink DIR655 which has QOS built-in (quality of service which
    optimizes VOIP).

For 5,000 monthly minutes, my total monthly cost is only $3.75 for
life which pays for gov't mandated taxes and fees. (don't get me
started on my opinion of having to pay phone-related taxes when I
don't have a "phone" so to speak.

So far, recommending Ooma is a no brainer. DO IT! IF you can
justify the upfront costs. For me, Ooma has an expected 5 month
    payback.
