• Video Problems

From BARRY MARTIN@454:3/105 to ALL on Thursday, March 03, 2011 11:47:00
    Hi Folks!

Time to put the thinking caps on! I think I know what the answer is but looking for others' advice and knowledge.

Running Windows XP. When viewing on-line videos (YouTube, etc.) all but
with the lowest resolution will have a problem where the video freezes
but the audio continues. With high resolutions I get buffering.

A video this morning had "all" the resolutions; here are the results:

240p Video: No problems other than grainy.
    Audio: No problems.

360p Video: Runs ~10 seconds, then pauses/freeze frames for « to
    4 seconds.
    Audio: No problems.

480p Video: Essentially same as 360p.
    Audio: No problems.

720p Video: Roughly the same as the comments for 360p but
movement starting to get jittery and the occasional
    buffering (rotating timer displayed)
    Audio: Pauses with video pausing.

1080p Video: Lots of buffering; lots of start/stop.
    Audio: Pauses when video pauses.

As mentioned, the OS is Windows XP (32-bit); cpu is AMD Athlon 64 3700+
@ 2.2 GHz; video card is nVidia GeForce 6100, 256 MB shared video. I'm thinking the video card should be upgraded (and get rid of that shared
    video!) Or am I wrong?

    TIA!

Assuming that you have a very good broadband connection... I would
have to say that a new video card with it's own memory ( 1 gig or
better ) would certainly help. :)

Replacing the video card was the solution I was thinking of. I've been playing with Mythbuntu. a computer network video recording OS, and a
video card with insufficient memory will cause similar results; just
wanted to make sure before I spend the money. Oh, with Mythbuntu a
monitor or TV with insufficient resolution will cause the video utility
to 'reboot'. The OS itself runs but the video doesn't. Know I'm not explaining that at all right.
