...Well, I haven't succumbed to the temptation yet to get a SATA drive. CM>...I've been wanting one of the high capacity (1TB or larger) drives for a CM>...while. Of course, like most things in life go, "the room you have, the CM>...more stuff you get". <G>
...Seriously though, I'd like a larger hard drive to store edited video, CM>...etc., on. It doesn't take much in the way of imported video to quickly CM>...fill up a hard drive these days.

Have you seen those HD docks that connect to the computer via USB
port and which allow you to easily hot swap HDs? They make 'em for
SATA drives but like you, I still use IDEs and wondered if you use
a dock like this, or have seen one specifically for PATA/IDE.

Thought maybe this would allow some more use out of all those
6-70gb HDs I have laying around but which are too small for any
    serious computing.

I've seen them, and Gregg Hommel has pointed out one to me he found on
    Tiger Direct, I think.

I don't have one at the moment. But, I think Ky Moffet pointed out that
the drive doesn't last nearly as long as in a regular external hard
drive case. I forget the exact details, but the drives don't hold up
quite as long in a "hot swap dock" as they do in a regular case.

I have a "SimpleDrive" external hard drive which stopped functioning.
With a little difficulty I opened up the case, and found it contained a standard hard drive in a HD dock tray. I checked the HD in my machine
by adding it as a slave, and it was OK. Then I put it back in the dock,
and it worked through the USB port. I surmise that there must have
been a bad contact somewhere. I am keeping the the dock tray open so
that I can use it with some of my other old drives.

    Who said dat??

I think what I read somewhere was because they sit at an angle, not
perfectly horizontal or vertical, it's hard on the drive. I suppose
one solution is to run a cable down into the hole in the dock, and
lay the drive flat on the desk. Voila, horizontal.
