• the end of an era...

From GENE KWIECINSKI@454:3/105 to ALL on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 00:09:00
It happened. I had to put my car to sleep. 24yrs old, 1yr away from
becoming a "classic car", and it's gone.

The tranny was slipping worse and worse, but I was putting it off, as
I'd be without a car for a week or so, as most shops would want to keep
it that long while they get around to it. Hell, the last time I had a
tranny rebuilt, I dropped if off on a Monday and was expecting it back
*by* Friday, but when I called on Thursday to see how things were going,
if I'd be able to get it back a day early, the guy told me he hadn't
even *looked* at it yet! Hence my general contempt for those places,
body shops, etc., who think that you could just pull a 2nd car out of
your ass and use that instead while your main car sits there like a
decoration in front of the shop.

Anyway, it got so bad that it became torque-limited, ie, barely touch
the pedal and it'll pull gently, but stomp on it to try to accelerate
onto an on-ramp, to pass someone, etc., and it'd just rev and make lots
of noise, but not pull at all. I was going to take it that Friday after
work to see how much and how long it'd be. Never made it that far.
Thursday night, it just started making Big Loud Ugly Noises... coming
from the right side of the car. Trouble is, the tranny's on the *left*
side. Uh-oh, that can't be good.

Take it the next day to the shop near me, he gives it one listen and
says forget it, he ain't gonna touch it. Something's busted, only deep
inside the engine, and he doubts I'd just want to write a blank check to
take it apart to *that* extent just to find out what's wrong, and to fix
it. Tranny, fine. Minor engine work, sure. *Both*? Nah, that's too
rich for my blood. Had to make the decision to put 'er down for good.

Called one of those donate-a-car places to let them have the carcass,
but not before I picked it clean. All my LED lights, my stereo,
speakers, ceebee, cellphone kit, antennas and cables, you name it. Only
things I left behind were my airhorns (pain to get to, not *that*
expensive, already aging), which didn't bother me, but a full tank of
gas, which *did*. Bought *2* f'n siphons, one the day before and one
the day it was towed away, and neither one would reach down to the
liquid level, and I had the tube down there so far that the sqeezy-bulb
was almost right up against the hole. Still wasn't grabbing any liquid.
Was tempted to just put a hole in the tank and collect the gas with a
    pan...

Anyway, it's done. Got a '99 Regal in its place, quite nice, and it can *pull*! :D Ain't crazy about 4dr cars, but wotdahell, I'll live with
it... I'll just keep the seats slid so far back no one'll be able to
    ride in back anyway. :D

    Hi Gene!

It happened. I had to put my car to sleep. 24yrs old, 1yr away
from becoming a "classic car", and it's gone.

    Awww, so close!

The tranny was slipping worse and worse, but I was putting it
off, as I'd be without a car for a week or so, as most shops

I don't think my old car had a transmission problem but wouldn't have
been surprised if that was "next on the list".

Take it the next day to the shop near me, he gives it one listen
and says forget it, he ain't gonna touch it. Something's busted,
only deep inside the engine, and he doubts I'd just want to write
a blank check to take it apart to *that* extent just to find out
what's wrong, and to fix it. Tranny, fine. Minor engine work,
sure. *Both*? Nah, that's too rich for my blood. Had to make
the decision to put 'er down for good.

I essentially did the same a little while back. Took in for an oil
change around the end of the year. "You've got an oil leak." Beyond
their scope of work so a few weeks later took it to another shop for a look-see. Oil leaking from the engine -- relative cheap part but the
labour's expensive. They also found some other problems (I told them
about a new squeek and another problem I didn't think was right) --
again parts relatively cheap but the labour's up there.

Last straw was when I got locked inside the car because the door
wouldn't latch. Figured the latch problem was because of water leaking
into the door with a thaw earlier inthe day and that turning to ice when
the temperature went below freezing again. Got the door to latch but
when I got home couldn't get it to unlatch.

Next morning off to a dealer; that afternoon I have a 2008 Aveo. Cute
little critter! And man does it have power! Touch the pedal and it
goes! Fortunately also great brakes -- much better than the old car!

it can *pull*! :D Ain't crazy about 4dr cars, but wotdahell,
I'll live with it... I'll just keep the seats slid so far back no
one'll be able to ride in back anyway. :D

Trouble is, can't touch the pedals except on tip-toe, but..... <g>

<shrug> The old car was a '93 Chevrolet Lumina Euro, which did have a
some decent pickup but mediocre braking. (And no, I'm not a "Chevrolet
man." Just happens the two cars meeting my requirements were from the
    same manufacturer. [Sort of!])

With this car the acceleration is even more. Not sure how it would do compared to a muscle car (and don't really care to), but it probably
would do pretty good in the accelerate to pass a car test.
