From Barry Martin@454:1/1 to Daryl Stout on Monday, February 20, 2023 07:41:00

    Hi Daryl!

A few years ago I ordered something noon/afternoon and got it the next morning! And no, did not pay for overnight shipping -- something I
have never done except with a legal document.
    That's very unusual.

Yes: I was surprised to get it that fast is an understatement.

Normally, Kroger will deliver stuff the
next day. At least with ordering groceries, they tell you when
your driver is on the way...as you pick the time slot, usually a
2 hour window. With other stuff, it's "any time before 7pm". Be
my luck, nature calls, and I'll be "occupied" when they arrive.

I hate those huge windows -- a two or three hour window isn't too bad.
Even then usually your bladder or bowel wants a lot of attention!

There was another one with Gertrude and Heathcliff, who were
flying over Washington, DC. One said "Look!! The Capitol!!", and
the other (grinning wryly) said "This One's On The House!!" <G>

    Punny!

LIS in the other message ("#1" in another conference) we had 3-4" of
snow yesterday with the temperaure staying just under freezing. This morning was 8o when I woke up and the wind chill was around 0o. Not supposed to warm up too much, though the weekend (as I write this
tomorrow will be Saturday) and beginning of next week highs predicted
    in the 40's.
We have 2 threats of severe weather this week...Wednesday and
Saturday. So, that means more BBS downtime.

The problem up here might be the storm (possibly ice storm as I
mentioned in the first part) might not be taken seriously. Here in the
Quad Cities we got 2-3" in the metro area; they were predicting up to
6". (West and north get their predicted amount of almost a foot.) The
storm here also was 'lazy': they were closing schools and businesses and
it was barely snowing. By the closing times I think there was 22 to 3". ...Suppose better dafe than sorry. ...Know a few school kids were all
excited about having a Snow Day but wasn't enough snow in the morning to
    go sledding.

I thought I had the sights set right. <G>
    Should had left them!
No wonder I haven't handled weaponry in 45 years, since that
hunter safety course I took after moving to Arkansas with the
    family.

Mine's closer to 50 in New Hampshire.

Probably: I don't recall. Been a while since the power failed and had
the lights on. Plus have a whole house surge suppressor so that should reduce the surge, therefore the bright flair.
I have surge protection, but when it comes to lightning, it's
    no contest.

True. I'll admit to thinking you're overly-cautious and you probably
thinking I'm throwing caution to the wind. Should there be a Huge
Lightening Storm in the nearby area I would do some unplugging. Some
lights would be kept on (expendable) so wandering-around safety. Would probably also keep one TV on to monitor weather reports. Would be one I wouldn't mind replacing! <g>

Gee, I thought the sliders were larger than nornal!
I like buying packs of the King's Hawaiian Dinner
Rolls...putting some butter on them, then zapping them in the
microwave for 30 seconds. Nothing like hot, fresh, buttered
    bread. :)

    Those are good that way!!

My old Brother ink jet printer sometimes was a little fussy that way: I was buying cartridges from Cartridge World and usually worked fine
without any fiddling. Every so often had to do some playing around,
    and rarely a dud.
The name brand ones work fine, but you can't use the generic
refills. They have made it where the printer (both Canon and HP)
won't recognize anything but the name brand cartridge.

When I bought my laser printer I also decided to go with the OEM
cartridges. Probably more expensive than refilled but I had had enough 'issues' with the refilled inkjet cartridges to solidify the decision.
(I don't think problems were 100% the fault of the refills.)

Now have a Lexmark laser printer -- colour! duplex! Toner cartridges
are a bit of a *gasp!* but are actually cheaper. I've never had a
toner cartridge dry up (it's already dry!). Plus laser print doesn't smear if gets wet like inkjet printing does.
I've had both Canon and Lexmark printers over the years. But
again, it's the cost of the ink cartridges that's a bear.

I've read where some people have just purchased a new printer when they
    run out of ink.

BTW, if an inkjet cartridge goes 'wee-wee' hand sanitizer is pretty
    good for removal.
Better have SHOUT if you get it on your clothes.

I'd shout getting my clothes stained! Here noticed there was a dark
blob on the shelf under the printer.

    Barry,

I hate those huge windows -- a two or three hour window isn't too bad. Even then usually your bladder or bowel wants a lot of attention!

That's my luck...when I have to go to the little Sysop's room for an
extended period (especially with being on Lasix, and just having eaten
a bunch of fibrous food), that they'll come to the door. It wouldn't be
so bad if someone else was here while I was indisposed.

It's like the joke where the various body parts were arguing over who
was the boss. So the anal orifice put in its claim, and the other body
parts laughed racuously. So, the @-hole shut down...and the whole body
went to pot (pun intended). It basically proves you don't have to very
talented to be a boss (which spelled backwards, is double SOB <G>), just
    an @-hole. :P

I wonder if that applied to the guy who was spotted by a friend in
the local athletic club shower, with a cork up his butt. He asked him
what that was about, and was told "I was walking along the beach, and
I stumbled into a bottle. Out popped a genie, that said "I can grant
you any wish"...and I said "No $***??". Timing and words are everything.

    Punny!

Gertrude and Heathcliff were casually flying through the air, and a
huge jet zooms by them. Gertrude asked Heathcliff "Did you see how
fast that bird was flying??". He replied "Shoot, honey. If your tail
was on fire, you'd move that fast, too!!" <G>.

Another day, Gertrude was complaining about how much of a pain in
the neck (and other places) that laying eggs was. Heathcliff said
"You're coming with me today. We're going downtown...they say that
the mayor is going to lay a cornerstone". <G>

The problem up here might be the storm (possibly ice storm as I
mentioned in the first part) might not be taken seriously. Here in the Quad Cities we got 2-3" in the metro area; they were predicting up to
6". (West and north get their predicted amount of almost a foot.) The storm here also was 'lazy': they were closing schools and businesses

to 3". ...Suppose better dafe than sorry. ...Know a few school kids
were all excited about having a Snow Day but wasn't enough snow in the morning to go sledding.

It's better to be safe than sorry...especially in my part of the
country, where folks don't know how to drive on it. If you cancel
schools, and shut stuff down, it doesn't do much. But, if you go
ahead and do it, at the worst possible moment, the storm decides
to unleash its worst...and you have a real mess out there.

True. I'll admit to thinking you're overly-cautious and you probably thinking I'm throwing caution to the wind. Should there be a Huge Lightening Storm in the nearby area I would do some unplugging. Some lights would be kept on (expendable) so wandering-around safety. Would probably also keep one TV on to monitor weather reports. Would be one
    I wouldn't mind replacing! <g>

I have a battery operated NOAA Weather Radio (Midland WR-120), with SAME (Specific Area Message Encoder) capabilities. This allows you to program
the unit to sound the warning alarm for selected watches and/or warnings,
for the desired counties. I take the one where I'm at, and the counties
that surround it...to get a little advance warning. I also have an app on
the smartphone, to alert me if lightning occurs within a certain radius
(I have it set for 25 miles), and to alert me every 15 minutes. This is
to alert me if something develops rapidly before radar picks it up. I
use the Radarscope app for my radar.

    Those are good that way!!

Now, I'm hungry. But, if they didn't want us having a midnight snack,
why did they put a light in the refrigerator and freezer?? <G>

When I bought my laser printer I also decided to go with the OEM cartridges. Probably more expensive than refilled but I had had enough 'issues' with the refilled inkjet cartridges to solidify the decision.
(I don't think problems were 100% the fault of the refills.)

I've greatly cut down on what I print.

I've read where some people have just purchased a new printer when they run out of ink.

They're still going have to get ink. There is a brand of Epson printer
where you can fill your own cartridges, I think...but there's still cost
and effort involved. I want it to be as effortless and easy as possible,
    as I'm not technically inclined.

I'd shout getting my clothes stained! Here noticed there was a dark
blob on the shelf under the printer.

Maybe the printer is taking a leak. <G>

An overnight winter storm is God saying "take today off".

Plus you've learned what the colours, symbols, etc., mean. LIS in the previous message, my little radar display was very colourful. Did note
a definite line between the oranges and reds and the blues: the 32o boundary.

Yeah, the radarscope app has that as well. But, if the temperature is forecast to be below 35, it's time to stay home (even though I do that
all the time now, after ending driving last summer).

snack, why did they put a light in the refrigerator and freezer?? <G>

    To wake up the flavours?!

Like the commercial for Arm And Hammer Baking soda...the old box was
on its last legs, and on the of the items smirks "Onion Power!! Ahhhh!!".
Then, the new box of baking soda arrives, and all the "stinky stuff"
growl as one "Party Pooper". :P

I've pretty much always tried not to waste paper and ink (now toner)
but sometimes just a heck of a lot easier to look at a printout. And
if the back of the printout is blank or sufficient portion is blank
I'll use it for scratch paper.

My late Mom did that with several items...but I rarely print anything anymore, especially considering the cost of ink cartridges. And, as I've
noted before, Canon and HP won't let you use "generic recycled ink cartridges"...you have to buy the more expensive name brand. Otherwise,
the software says "you're out of ink", and it won't let you print stuff.

The new printers come with a starter container of ink.

I can't afford any new hardware of software anymore.

Ages ago I considered the super-generic kit to fill ones own inkjet cartridges. Pretty much knew not for me: potentially too messy, plus I have the tendancy to over-do: I'd try to put just a little bit more ink
in now so I'd have more time between fills.

I just cut down on what I print.

Maybe the printer is taking a leak. <G>

It did have a case of incontinence!

Maybe the air bladders in the cartridges were weak. :P

A few years ago I had left for a doctor's appointment -- was cold and

Maybe I can go the three more miles to my appointment and by the time

Right, and from what I've heard some colour printers won't let one print
using just black if the colour cartidges are out/missing. I think my
printer is one of those; just ordered Yellow and Cyan over the weekend.
Don't need either quite yet and was going to wait but saw something
which changed my mind: one of my sources was out of stock (really??!!

'6 left' in the other. Ayeee!!

The new printers come with a starter container of ink.

If there was some sort of (worthwhile) buy-back for the barely-used

mind -- now to figure a flat way back home: want to avoid hills!

A fellow ham radio operator went to visit his son in the hospital, and
when he came out, it was snowing to beat the band. He had to carefully
navigate on the way home...he noted that numerous vehicles were running off
the road into the median and into the ditch!!

Right, and from what I've heard some colour printers won't let one

We have a limited supply...and when we run out, we'll go to the back

If there was some sort of (worthwhile) buy-back for the barely-used printer it might be worth considering. Personally I have a hard time tossing away an otherwise perfectly good piece of hardware.

I get a $1 credit (big deal) for each cartridge I take back to Office
Depot. When they charge $25 for a black and $35 for a multi-color print cartridge, you can see who's making out like a bandit.

No problems with the cartridge drying out?

Not lately. I can run a test pattern to moisten it back up. Besides,
    paper and ink are expensive!!

Maybe the air bladders in the cartridges were weak. :P

Here: have a can of beans and put on these roller skates!

A few years ago I had left for a doctor's appointment -- was cold and raining when I left. (Don't recall the temperature.) About a mile and the rain is starting to get a little hard; bit further and really hard! Maybe I can go the three more miles to my appointment and by the time
I'm done things will be cleared? ...About a minute later changed my
mind -- now to figure a flat way back home: want to avoid hills!
A fellow ham radio operator went to visit his son in the
hospital, and when he came out, it was snowing to beat the band.
He had to carefully navigate on the way home...he noted that
numerous vehicles were running off the road into the median and
    into the ditch!!

On the way home I saw a couple cars slide into the guard rail: not going
fast but just enough to loose traction on the down-sloop and wheeeeee!

Right, and from what I've heard some colour printers won't let one
print using just black if the colour cartidges are out/missing. I
think my printer is one of those; just ordered Yellow and Cyan over the weekend. Don't need either quite yet and was going to wait but saw something which changed my mind: one of my sources was out of stock (really??!! this is not a garage company) and Amazon was '10 left' in
one colour and '6 left' in the other. Ayeee!!
We have a limited supply...and when we run out, we'll go to the
back room, and get another limited supply. :P

Sometimes it seems that way! Pre-pandemic is was "in-time delivery" or something like that: have enough in the stock (back room, warehouse,
wherever) so not run out; have the shipment deliver juuuuust as running
    out.

If there was some sort of (worthwhile) buy-back for the barely-used printer it might be worth considering. Personally I have a hard time tossing away an otherwise perfectly good piece of hardware.
I get a $1 credit (big deal) for each cartridge I take back to
Office Depot. When they charge $25 for a black and $35 for a
multi-color print cartridge, you can see who's making out like a
    bandit.

A dollar is better than nothing, but still on the chintzy side. CartridgeWorld used to have a punch card: buy 10 (?) cartridges, get the 11th/next one free. ...Hmmm: currently I use the 'free return
programme' with Lexmark: fill out an on-line form and they send me a
pre-paid UPS label. Bet the postange and UPS charges are built into the
    price of the cartidge!

No problems with the cartridge drying out?
Not lately. I can run a test pattern to moisten it back up.
Besides, paper and ink are expensive!!

My thinking is more frequent printing of something I could use would
make better use of the paper and ink.

Maybe the air bladders in the cartridges were weak. :P
    Kegel exercises!
Do they have to be naked to do it?? :P

Yes: easier to clean any dribble!

    Barry,

If those old man using the walker and roller skates can do it.....
That's the entertainment at the nursing home each night. <G>

Cards, checkers and TV get boring after a while.

    You forgot sleep. <G>

Here: have a can of beans and put on these roller skates!

I'll take anything I can eat right now...I ran out of food last night.

On the way home I saw a couple cars slide into the guard rail: not
going fast but just enough to loose traction on the down-sloop and wheeeeee!

    Hello, Insurance Adjustor?? :P

Sometimes it seems that way! Pre-pandemic is was "in-time delivery" or something like that: have enough in the stock (back room, warehouse, wherever) so not run out; have the shipment deliver juuuuust as running out.

Well, it doesn't make them any money just sitting there on the warehouse floor.

I used to have a Lexmark...I now have a Canon MG-2100. I hope it doesn't quit, as then I can't print anything. The printer doesn't cost that much,
    but it's the ink cartridges.

My thinking is more frequent printing of something I could use would

If I print something, it'll be a flier I can take to a square dance, or
a ham radio license exam session.

Yes: easier to clean any dribble!

Depends on the type of toilet paper you have handy. <G>

    Hi Daryl!

I'll take anything I can eat right now...I ran out of food last
    night.

You'd make a lousy New Englander! Dad was born and raised in the White Mountains region of New Hampshire and told me stories of being snow-
bound. (No, he didn't do the walk to school uphill both ways thing.)

On the way home I saw a couple cars slide into the guard rail: not

    Hello, Insurance Adjustor?? :P

Yup. The good news is they were sliding at a low speed: more than
enough to make dents but not cause injury.

Sometimes it seems that way! Pre-pandemic is was "in-time delivery" or something like that: have enough in the stock (back room, warehouse, wherever) so not run out; have the shipment deliver juuuuust as running out.

True. Actually costs them money to pay for the storage. Also costs
them money to be out of stock.

That's where the money is made! Essentially give away the printer and
make the money on the stuff to make it work.

In an emergency anything is good!
