• Happy Opening Day!

From Margaerynne@VERT/PALANT to All on Sunday, April 02, 2023 22:17:00
So I'm a little late, but the point still stands--
Happy MLB Opening Day, to all who celebrate!

We went out to join the rest of Cincinnati for the traditional
parade (over 100 years, after the 1919 World Series), though
enthusiasm for actually /watching/ the ailing Redlegs was quite a bit
bit more muted. But they did manage to win the series 2-1 against the Pirate the Pirates, so that's something at least.

As for my first love, the soggy Mariners, things are significantlyy
brighter. The rotation is solid, the team is young and capable,
and the front office is (hopefully) done rearranging the core of
the team, and is focusing on a playoff run.

Needless to say, I'm excited for what this year holds.

I'm an Angels fan and though I live in SoCal, I work in NorCal a lot, so I went to the Opening Day game between the Angels and A's, sitting right behind the visiting/Angels dugout. Shohei put on quite the show (though the Angels still lost, 2-1), it was still a good, crisp game. The new rules are definitely speeding things up!

Happy MLB Opening Day to you too! I'm excited for the 2023 season!

Lifelong Red Sox fan here, born and raised in New England, and now
living in Florida. Haven't paid enough attention yet this spring, but I
fear my team has made too many changes and not sure what the outlook is. Perhaps the best I can hope for is to finish ahead of the Yanks. ;-)

New rules are interesting indeed. I must say that in the couple of
games I've watched so far, it seems like the pitcher is rushed a little
too much. I'm thinking the clock could be a little longer, myself.

I enjoy watching the smaller regional teams over the MLB. Back when I was senior in high school there was a freshman or sophomore that had one hell of
an arm. His name is Matt Mantei. He played for the Marlins, Diamondbacks
and Red Sox. He encountered a right elbow injury and it never quite
    recovered.

23 games in and I am no longer quite as excited for the 2023 season

But maybe the Mariners can pull off another miracle after they get back up to .500?

My Red Sox are in the same boat. I'm not super optimistic they're gonna improve much on this.

Well, life has a way of surprising people!

One of my favorite things about baseball is that you really never know what's coming
around the corner, even if you have a good guess. A slump or streak could happen at
    any time, and change everything.

Maybe if I was the type to gamble that would be a bad lesson, but as someone who doesn't
trust my own luck, it just gives me more of a mellow go-with-the-flow sense about things
    I can't control.

(Of course I'm only human, and still get too invested into a team that's consistently
exactly what it says it is, but at least I know what I signed up for)

'Tis true! Since I wrote the above, the Sox are currently on a 7-game
winning streak and scoring a LOT of runs. Have moved from 5th to 3rd
place in the AL East. Haha... but... I know it can go the other way
too, and quickly. Looks like Tampa Bay is going to be hard to catch
this year. But, that's why we play 162 games. :-)

You absolutely should! The Cubs/Sox double feature is on my bucket list,
and you can't beat either stadium for what it does.

I gotta feel for the Cubs, though. The post-World Series teardown looks
painful to go through, even if I might never see it for myself.

All the more reason to celebrate each game like it's the only one that
    matters!

I actually just checked the standings, and what the hell is going on over
there? Maybe things will shake out as normal by the end of the season,
but I really can't say I was expecting that.

At least the NL West and NL East are behaving normally, even if nobody
    else is.

It' s been awhile since I've been to a major league game. I have a cousin th at works at eh Four Winds Field in South Bend (Cubs minor team) and used to drive up[ to Kalamazoo when they had a Frontier League team. Last Major
League game I went to was a Sox game at Comiskey a long time ago, when Bo Jackson played for the Sox. Price of concessions was high back then, and I'd hate to see what a beer and a hot dog cost now. I think that's why I liked minor league venues.

Not sure what they were back then, but they're typically not great nowadays. Beers are $8-15, with a simple
    hot dog running $5+.

It doesn't seem to correlate much with ticket price, either. The Mariners had $5 craft beer carts, though they
were somewhat rare, while the Reds have extremely pricey concessions. But at least the Reds let you bring a cooler in?
